Does anyone else feel that unless you really love a game your not gonna finish it?

This happens to me all the time. Right now I got Brothers in Arms Hells Highway. I know a lot of people didn't like this game for some reason or other, but I enjoyed it. I played it til about halfway through and never had a bad experience. But now it seems like a chore to pick up the controller and turn on the xbox. This happens with pretty much every game unless it's a spectacular game. I know I'll have fun if I just start, but the motivation to start really isn't there even when I'm bored and don't have anything else going on.

The strange thing is I come on here and check out the forums for all sorts of games and read what people say about them ALL the time. And I'm often excited about some game or other and I'd consider games to be a huge part of my life. But it just seems like I enjoy anticipating games and talking about games more than I enjoy actually PLAYING games.

Can anybody else out there relate to what I'm saying at all?

I don't think you're normal...

Sometimes I don't wanna finish a game because it's so good that I don't want it to end! But in order to keep playing I have to finish it :p

I don't finish a game unless it's horrible...

Do you feel like that with anything else?

I actually don't do this with any of my other hobbies. I read a lot of books and I've only stopped reading a book before I finish it if it's really bad. I'd even say that I'm more into games than I am into books, it's just that I come on these forums and learn about games more than I play them. I buy pretty much any game that I think I'll enjoy and like I said I DO enjoy playing the games I buy, it's just that when I put the controller down it's really hard to pick it back up later.

I don't have any problem starting a new game, the problem is with continuing games that I'm in the middle of.

it got reason. i am pretty same about alot of gamz and it's because of the gameplay i'm not saying BIA is a boring game but if there is nothing new happening in a game after 4 5 hr of playing you don't wanna play it anymore even if you are exited about it

I'm like this too,

I'll buy a game and play it a couple times and then not touch it again

Only game like COD4 or Gears captivate me long enough to play through the whole thing

Right now I have alot of games. 90% of them aren't finished yet, so i end up standing in front of my Xbox trying to decide which game to play. On top of that i have Live, so it gets worse because not only am i looking for a game, but now I'm also contemplating on whether to play online or offline. I wish i didn't have school or work, b/c i would finally be able to beat some of my games

I think someone said it before, but the only reason I wouldn't finish a game at least once through is if it sucked and I really didn't enjoy playing it.

I don't buy games that I don't like though so I've beaten all the ones I own multiple times. My guess is you just have really bad ADD or something. My roomate suffers from the same thing. He can't play a game for more than 10 minutes it seems like since he gets bored so easily.

I play through all my games at least once. After that...it takes some good achievments or excellent replay value to make me play them through multiple times.

I am sort of the same.

IMO i think it just happens when you get older, i am now 26 amd have been gaming since 1988 when i got an atari from christmas and ever since then i have had just about every video game system ever released i still have most them in my loft nes/snes/mega drive/master system/game gear/gameboy/atari 2600/amiga 500/amiga 600+/amiga 1200/spectrum zx/commodore 64/N64/PS/saturn/PS2/xbox/GBA along with thousands of games(allot of which are floopy disc amiga games) and back in those earlier days i could play games for hours on end completing every game i bought and enjoying every second.

When i was about 17-21 i stopped gaming allot and would only play a couple of hours per month as at the age your starting to hit the clubs and what not, then when i settled down again and was working full time i started gaming hardcore again and even then i enjoyed it allot and could game for hours on end.

But over the last 2-3 years i find myself rarely finishing games unless they really drag me in mass effect/MGS4/dead rising and gears of war were the last to do it properly.

I like to collect games also so i buy allot of games, which i think is my problem as every anticipated game i buy on day one, for instance on the 24th i will get several games i have pre-ordered fable 2/LBP/far cry 2 and dead space then a week later fallout 3 and more in novemeber, i also have a pile off games i have only half finished or barely started at all, like obilvion(which i just started a new game of last night as i really want to finish at put some good hours into it before the new games arrive) crysis/crysis warhead/stalker 1/2/heavenly sword/RFOM/ninja gaiden/DMC4/uncharted/ass creed among others some games like grid/dirt/lost planet/spore/motorstorm and others i have barely touched.

I have so many games i want to play but with work and other things keeping me busy i rarely get the chance, i want to stop buying every game on day 1 and just start buy 1 finish it then but another but i just think i may aswell get them now and just leave 1 till i finish 1 but that does not happen.

In my case its not so much that im not enjoying them its that i dont have the time or i keep getting new games which i start playing.

Also i find myself on the forums or on sites just reading previews watching videos talking about games coming up and im really excited to play them but once i get them i barely touch them.

Lost odyssey for instance really dragged me in and i played through the first 3 discs(around 35 hours) in a few weeks not playing anything else then i got a new game i forget what and i still have not got round to finishing the last disc, i only just started and finished my effect in August even though i bought it on release day in 07.

Some games will seem interesting and novel at the beginning, but seem more and more like a grind the more I play them. I will finish a game, though, no matter how sick of it I am. I guess that doesn't make a lot of sense.

I hear ya bud, i know exactly what your talkin about and i wouldn't even say it's a question of being normal it's just how serious and how much enjoyment you get outta your gaming. I have games sitting beside me on my desk that i've bought but just don't really play or can't get into. A game like Oblivion, i saw how popular it was, the tons of goods review so i got excited when i bought it but i don't think i've played more than 5 hours of it. Or GTA4, i can remember how much i anticipated playing this game but after a couple hours, thiers only so much crashing and shooting people you can do. The only thing that prolly drives me to give these games more time is for the achievment points. Then on the flip side there were games like Gears and Assassins Creed that i couldn't stop playing till I had finished them (3 times for gears all 3 difficultys) And as is the case for most mature gamers, theres only so much time in the week we get too actually play our 360's with the responsibilitys alot of us have, work, girlfriends, maintaining a good social life, even kids for some people. When i turn my system on, I most often find myself playing Halo 3 online among anything else, the single player didn't do it for me and really it's what I currently enjoy playing the most.

Thats what gaming is really about, what you enjoy and not just playing games for the sake of playing them.

It makes perfect sense. I'm the same way. There is no way that i can buy a game and not beat it. I think it's the perfectionist in me. For instance, in Mass effect or Oblivion, i don't consider the game beaten until i have done all the missions in the game (Side Quest included). So if i do decide to buy that game, you best believe I'm gonna play it to the end. With the exception of my Playstation 2 and Original Xbox games (I just can't find the time or the motivation to play these games, still haven't beat FF12, Socom, and other old titles)

I'm exactly the same. Like I'm on the forums A LOT...and know a lot about games, read about them, wait for reviews etc...I get a lot of games as well...but then I get them and play them once or twice then it's just like such a task to begin playing it again. When I actually start playing, I'll go for hours, but before that it's just like...I'm really bored, theres an Xbox with tons of games...do I really wanna play? haha It is a bit out of the normal range I think but meh, I still love video games in general and will continue playing them.

Yeah, i think i know where your coming from.Right now i have gta 4 saints row halo 3 assasins creed, and a few others and the only game i got myself to finish was call of duty 4. I have had these games for like 3 or 4 months and i'm not saying that the games arent good. Its just that i dont really feel the compelling need to go and finish them i guess its because i know that they will always be there for me to play when ever....or..maybe its because i have so many games that i jus cant choose what to key in on,cause now that i think about it,at the time that i was really into the COD 4 single player it was the only game i had.

There's a lot of games I love that I never played through. It all comes down to which games are the best, though. I can like a dozen different games a lot and never finish any of them because I have 3 other games that are just plain better than them.

As you may or may have not heard me recall in previous posts, this happened to me with my PS2. I had a thriving collection of PS2 games for a few years there, and while I liked all of the games I had, in hindsight only a couple of those games were of superb quality. But then, I don't think the PS2 was the right console for me - I would have been smarter to stick with my Gamecube, which is why I went back and bought up all of those great games since then.

Fantastic point. Choosing which game to work on is a tough decision in and of itself. Really, the key is to have a nice wide range of games from different genres, and all of them have to be games that you really care about and enjoy playing. Wasting your time with a game that you ultimately aren't that attached to, can cause you to actually dislike games and become bored of gaming.

And yeah, the games are always there for you to enjoy. I don't understand most people's need to constantly surround themselves with new stuff, and to continually discard anything they deem 'old'. If a game is worth its bucket o' blood, it will withstand the test of time.

Yes, especially with GTA IV. I was so hyped for this game and got it the week it came out, I have only put 8 hours into it, and still cannot make myself play it. It is a remarkable accomplishment, I just for some reason can't make myself play it.

I'm the same way. I feel like games anymore don't really give you that great of an incentive to keep playing. Repetitive gameplay or a cliche storylines / dull character development is usually what causes me to leave a game unfinished.

I know exactly what you mean sir...This is a blog I made yesterday that is all too fitting for this topic. Check it.

My primary gaming system is the Xbox 360 (Elite). I own pretty much any title that is worth owning right now. Any others, I have most likely played.

Everything from the outstanding Oblivion right down to the God-awful Sneak King. In and out. Through and through. Start to finish... (Yes, even online.)

But here lately, it seems like I keep finding myself searching retail store after retail store, flea markets, online sites, and even yard sales in a vulture like fashion for any new or used games that might strike my fancy...The thing is -- I keep getting disappointed.
I do super amounts of research online, in magazines, through word of mouth, playing demos, all that...but I simply cannot find any games right now that jump out and scream, "Buy me! I'm good!"

Every game that I've looked forward too or gotten "hyped" about in the past 6 months has been a major let down. (i.e. Too Human, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and so on.) Granted there are things on the way that will undoubtedly deliver (i.e. Fable 2, Left 4 Dead and so on) but I feel that being a core gamer means I shouldn't have to wait...right?

So I guess my question is...
Is there something wrong with me...or the games?

I think developers are failing miserably at varying gameplay and creating a storyline and characters that anyone gives a **** about.

But honestly I think it would help if you just went and played Hell's Highway right now.

That doesnt happen till my second or third playthrough. Like Gears im on my 3rd playthrough on insane. I want to get the achievements and stuff but by act 4 im done and just cant. And i agree i know ill enjoy a game once i start playing its just that i dont WANT to start playing. i get what you mean but i do always finish 95% of my games. Once in a while a game like Overlord comes around though.

I guess its normal, but i have a bad case of this. I have so many games that i havent finished. I didnt even get past the 2nd chapter on gears of war.

Halo and Cod4 were the only campaigns i ever finished. Still working on bioshock, saints row1, condemned, star wars tfu, vegas 2, skate, stranglehold, bf bad company, mercs 2, and oblivion.. so pretty much nearly every game!!

I think you're just growing up and starting to lose interest; I'm going through the same thing. A year ago I was so pumped up to live on my own and just play games. I live with my friends and altogether we pretty much have all the of the highest rated games on X360, yet we hardly finish them.

So I guess my question is...
Is there something wrong with me...or the games?Johnny-n-Roger

I think developers are failing miserably at varying gameplay and creating a storyline and characters that anyone gives a **** about.

I think the developers do a damn good job, it's just we consumers want new this and new that every month. You try writing an Earth-shattering story sometime - it is no easy task.

I'm the exact same way. I buy game after game only to have them sit on the shelf after a couple hours of play. I've come to the conclusion that if a game is good you will finish it, bottom line is their isn't any really good games out and most games are the same.

Sometimes other things just happen and I can't get back to finish a game. Ninja Gaiden II for example, I've been telling myself to finish it for a month and haven't gotten to it. Not because I don't want to, I like the game, but just don't have the time. And with Dead Space coming tomorrow followed by Guitar Hero, Fallout3 and GOW2, I doubt I'll get it done before Christmas.
