Probably would if I had Gold, but I'm content with Silver being that I do not care too much for on-line gaming.
Why don't you just turn off your notifications? And / or appear "offline" so no one will bother you.i usually disconnect my 360 from the internet when i play single player games, i just get sick of invites and "this person" is online, so am i the only one who does this or what?

Yeah I do the same its no ones fault but a learnt the hard way when trying to play Bioshock and Dead Space for the first time getting invites while trying to listen to cut scenes and the story is a pain, so instead of signing in going down to edit profile then blocking online status the reseting the console I just unplug my network adapter.
i dnt disconnect i will appear offline or put busy as my status2pac_makaveli
Bingo, same here. Some singleplayer games (Oblivion) require you to be online to load DLC. I usually set myself to Busy when playing Mass Effect. The notification balloon precisely covers up the coversation wheel, which drives me ****ing nuts.
I wont even play my 360 if my net is out because then I just get spammed with messages saying I cheat if I have 1k+ more gamerscore next time I log in. If the pop ups of people logging on annoy me I just delete them or turn notifications off.
I don't disconnect...I mean, the 'your friend is online' thing only covers a bit of the screen :)

And just for a few seconds so it doesn't bother me at all.
yeah i should do that. sometimes i get a message from my gf that will say "are you playing a game?" because she has msn messenger and it shows my xboxlive account on there.
it makes sense if you want to play an offline 1player game like Fallout3 or something for an extended period of time w/o interruptions on the screen.
If I get an invite to something I ignore it unless I'm playing that game. It's kind of irritating when someone spams me with MW2 invites while I'm playing Mass Effect, but I like to know who's online.
The only time I actually disconnect is if I told a real-life friend I was too busy to go out with them (because I didn't feel like it) and I'm playing Xbox instead ;P
well the reason i dont just set it to busy or offline is because my family goes on the internet also and i am using a lot of our connection speed if i just keep it hooked up
I always leave mine connected. But I dont have enough friends for it to be a distraction :( (wipes a tear)
