all I'm saying is that jumping too much makes you an easy target. you can get sniped a lot, and that's not good. so make sure you know what you're doing before you go off jumping around everywhere lol.

Well the only way to compete with the best is to get good with the BR. 3 shots to the body and 1 to the head. Keep the sensitivity down to get a steady BR. A BR and sniper are the best combo because you can hit a guy with the snipe and switch to the BR to finish him off. Switch you control layout to Bumper Jumper so that when you jump you can still look around at the same time. Learn to strafe. Combine short and long strafes to keep your opponent guessing. Turn off vibration. With vibration on your mind becomes dependant on it and you become less aware of your surroundings. These tips are a good start!

Get some friends together in real life, or online in a custom game and work on your BR and no scoping. When using the BR, don't jump up and down, strafe back and worth, I find aiming for the neck helps hit them in the head because the gun jerks up a little, and learn to four shot.

Everything said above is an excellent start. Also check out bungie.net and see where you died and how they killed you and such. Avoid the center of rooms if you can help it and get to know the maps and there choke points. Simply time in the game already puts you above the newbs, but it seems with every online game I play someone is almost always ranked above me, and by a lot.

Don't lose!...just kidding, Get better with BR, (it's bread and butter) and know where the weapons on the map are and how to use them. I always find that a shotgun goes good with just about anything lol, then there is no competition when someone tries to melee you.

no scoping is not as improtant as using the BR well. Try playing a few games of team swat on about 3 sensitivity and get used to aiming for the head. Then jump into some slayer, turn your sensitivity up to about 5 (depends on what you like) and just kinda pretend your playing swat, just remember it takes more than one shot :). That is pretty much how I prefected my BR skills.

Basically perfect the BR and do not chase after an opponent. You allow them to use the map against you. Chasing leads to them using a grenade and a one shot to the dome.

I could go on for a while about this, I'll try my best to make it both accurate and short. Hope you like light reading.

I am a Staff Captain in rank, mainly because I simply dislike the Halo 3 community in the ranked playlists, but I have learned a great deal about the game.

1. - Control your top weapons. Find the ones you like and stick with them. Make sure you have enough alternatives that you are always using something you are good with, but not so many that you are constantly swapping weapons.

Good weapons to be seriously good with are - BR (Battle Rifle), AR (Assault Rifle) and the Shotgun or Sniper depending on your prefered playstyle.

The BR is the ultimate medium range weapon as four headshots kills any foe, end of story. The AR is the ultimate pressure weapon, it has a large clip and quickly tears away shields for a melee kill, It is also the appropriate and common counter weapon for the BR within medium to close range.

The Shotgun is great for both ambushing and simply camping. It allows you to pick and area and own it. Either find a doorway and give a quick shoot + Melee combo or set ambushes by hiding in the path the enemy must take, then move the ambush from another angle when they try to counter you thinking you wouldn't have moved.

The Sniper can be near godliness if you choose early on WHAT type of sniper you are. You are either like me, a Sniper who focuses ONLY on assisting teammates against key opponents, or a cold-hearted killer who nails anyone who sticks their head out. Whether through assists or kills, you can effectively use this to bring a large number of kills tot he table.

Also, note that some weapons can be used to replace others, the Mauler can get the two hit kill like the sniper with a simple Shoot + Melee, The BR in the hands of a very capable player can kill at quite long range, it will even annoy enemy snipers by taking them out of scope (enemy shots drop your sniper scope on impact)

2. - Random groups are the majority of Halo, but I highly reccomend knowing the people you are playing with somewhat. The orginization of a team can win matches. Even if that orginization is only to the point of knowing how your teammates play. Don't be afraid to try to get to know the playstyles of players who would like to party with you, they could teach you something in some cases, a lot of my own technique and skill is learned from my teammates.

3. - Ignore any and all disruptive players. The Halo 3 community is crap. Absolute crap. For every player who is a good kind of guy, there are ten trash talking tweens who want to compare worthless rank and number statistics with everyone they meet. IF you can play Halo 3 in a party chat, play it in a party chat. If not, mute anyone who trash talks without warning. They aren't worth the time to even acknowledge. Your entire experience will pick up the minute you ditch the overcompetitive side of the game.

Bungie.net is nothing more but a forum full of "Why I haz n0 R3c0nz" and "I am better then you" threads. Sure stat tracking is indeed a very handy factor, but players who are worried about their statistics drag down a team more often then not because it tends to lead to being a K/D fanatic. Anyone who has played Halo 3 for any extended time knows allowing yourself to play based of your stats will choke your game 9 times out of 10.

^This and always have grenades (Preferbaly Plasma Grenades). Try your best not to die b/c if you don't care it will add up. Last but not least, just have fun, if you do bad one game the next one won't be that bad. I mean we all have our days, don't letone day determine if you like the game or not (That's why some people hate the game, b/c they suck). Oh yeah one more thing about the grenades, if you time it right, you can kill someone with one grenade and one BR shot. I personally love doing this.

like Herold said, grenades are your best friend. You're rarely going to get an instant kill but they take off a lot of damage makingthe enemyeasier tofinish off with a BR. Also getting good at the Spartan Laser helps. But just remember to keep tossing those nades!

Know your surroundings. Know where the snipers snipe and the campers camp (usually where a shotgun and energy sword is). If playing with a team don't go Rambo. Stick close to people and you'll live a bit longer. Also, keep an eye your radar.

3. - Ignore any and all disruptive players. The Halo 3 community is crap. Absolute crap. Agreed. 99% of the time I mute everyone. I have a blast and don't have to hear all the nonsense. I stick to social slayer aswell.

All the suggestions are very useful but also playing the game on legendary difficulty is a big help as well, play it a couple times through and your skills should improve.

Obv get good with BR (Even though i hate it :] ). Play SWAT to get better at headshots with it.

Try sneaking a bit coz you wont come up on radar and will surprise your enemies and get the first few shots in.

Im a hypocrite for saying this but dont run right into battle going for kills and not caring about deaths, hang back and keep your cool so you can pick people off. ;)

yes battle rifle shots are very good. but if you have the grunt birthday party skull it really does wonders because one headshot on a grunt kills all grunts around it.

Like most of these posters have mentioned, knowing how to use the battle rifle and knowing the map (weapon locations, possible sniping spots, and they lay out). Also, I'd like to mention this. Sometimes, staying together can help. I follow my teammates often. Unless I have something like a BR, Sniper Rifle, shotgun or rocket launcher, I will most likely stay close to my teammates. I don't walk right beside them, but I stay within a certain distance. The reason being is this. There are moments when we seem to drain the other players' shields but we just didn't get that last bullet to hit to finish him off before he did. Here, if you're within range, you can quickly finish your opponent off before his shields regenerate. I guess what I'm trying to say is strength in numbers can be helpful in most situations. When things are 2 vs 1, your team has an opportunity to benefit from the numbers.

For singleplayer:

  • Stay in cover
  • Don't rush out
  • scout the terrain
  • look for enemy tanks
  • Fill up on ammo whenever possible

For multiplayer:

  • Same stuff as singleplayer tips
  • Get vehicles (depending on your skill whether it's driving or shooting)
  • Plasma grenades are your friend.
  • Use headsets (people like you more and often party up)
  • Never stay in one place
  • Use the BR a lot!
  • Avoid rockets that are heading your way

Also for multiplayer, If you're doing CTF, partner up with someone to have them drive you when you have the flag, or the other way around.

Another one is to reload whenever possible. I don't suggest reloading when you are facing an enemy. Also go for the energy sword.
