anyone else find the mass effect story confusing? (****SPOILERS***)

so far i finished feros and what i understand is:

theres a specter named saron who decided that he would go solo and tamper some aritfact at eden prime. he lost his specter status and john shepard was inducted as a specter. john is supposed to go look for saron and stop him from doing... something with the artifact that involves some species of computer-aliens called the geth. i dont know what he wants to do. i (john) went to feros to do... something, it was just really confusing and some stuff happened and im just lost. is it supposed to be like that? am i supposed to be forgetting things as i go along? imo, they put too many details about stuff in your face at once and it soon becomes one big mess. do the small details (like what happened at feros) matter in the long run?

Take time to talk to as many people as you can. It opens up entries in the codex that expand things even more. The more you read, the more you're invested in the universe they created and the more you will understand.

And, to be honest, its a lot more understandable than your average JRPG story or MGS game. Not trying to start anything by that statement, but its how I feel.

Exactly it is all explained. Also if you are skipping dialogue, STOP IT!

You go to Feros and the other planets because Saren was sighted there, and it's your mission to find him and find out his master plan... it becomes clear later on, just keep going! and doing side quests will, as someone above stated, open Codex entries which can help you understand more about the ME universe.
