Ok, this is getting ridiculous. First was the xbox360. Then the pro with the hard drive, then the elites, then the 360s, and pros with hdmi outputs. Now there are rumors of another xbox with HD-DVD capabilities with wireless? It's like this generation of gaming hardware is not even complete and microsoft is just building on top of it and fixing their old mistakes (ROD anyone?)

Sony is by no means an exempt to this criticism, but although to a much lesser degree. Most of their changes are just with hard drive sizes, which could've been swapped with any notebook hard drive you find online anyways. Their biggest change was with backwards compatibility; some using software BC, some hardware BC, and now some with no BC. Mind you though, microsoft is completely ignoring backwards compatibility now and no one seems to have a problem with it. Regardless, sony is still a culprit of spitting out unnecessary amount of SKUs.

I am not a fanboy for either company. I just wish this generation was like last generation and companies would come out with ONE console that would last it's intended timeframe. But it is sad that no matter how much we complain, there is simply no way we can boycott any of this because people will always choose the newest hardware. Even worst though is that if this trend continues, we can all expect to see it next generation as well.

Instead of these updates, they should've been implemented from the very beginning, they admitted hardware failure on EVERY console in the first shipment, they should've delayed like sony, delivering a more finished product, it's not like these updates are free either, I say microsoft owe their consumers a great deal of things, but at the very least a functional xbox360, I sure as hell know that is what I expected when I bought it, and it's a reasonable deal, to trade one for a version that won't break, this wouldn't have been a problem if they had warned ppl like: "This sh1theap will break soon" then at least you'd be prepaired and couldn't blame them for a faulty product.

I own both consoles, A 360 Elite, and a 60 gig PS3. I can honestly say I am much less pissed off at Microsoft with all thier SKUs than I am with Sony.

I know the original launch 360s had a horrid failure rate, and even the new consoles are probably still failing at a too high a rate, but the bottom line is, that atleast Microsoft is trying, every single revision and every single new SKU, has been an improvement over the last one.

They added HDMI, they added better cooling heatsinks, now a cooler running processor chip, they added better DVD drives, larger HDDs, and in the process of it all, they took nothing away from us. This new arcade console honestly actually makes the core system an actual decent option to look at for some people. I'm not saying Microsoft has done everything right or the way they could have, but atleast they are trying to move the console and everything about it forward.

Sony on the other hand has given us nothing but crap. They haven't added anything at all and have taken plenty away. The 80 gig is largely the same as the original 60, except for a large chunk of PS2 games that are not compatible and several more than run like crap because of the software emulation over the Emotion chip. As someone with a large PS2 collection and a lot of gadgets that leave no room in my entertainment center for a PS2, that matters to me.

The 40 gig is a complete piece of crap, no memory slots, and absolutely no BC? WTF is that?I'm unhappy, because as an owner of a 60 gig with an emotion chip, if my PS3 dies or even 2 or 3 years from now it dies and I go to get a new one, I'm facing the very real possiblity, of having to get one with less features and less or no BC of PS2 games. How is that anything but a bad thing? I don't care about the price cuts, I was willing to spend the money in the first place, but damnit give me a product worth it, and if your going to change it, make it better, don't start ripping stuff out of it.

No the ps3 was unreasonably priced, but they've delivered a finished product at least, I won't buy it till the price drops even further, but I bet the lifespan is alot longer, took 5 years for my ps1 and ps2 to break, and then even the ps1 worked as long as I kept it upside-down.

All I'm saying is, they delivered a more stable product, even though the pricing is nothing but rape.

Why would I get mad at microsoft for improving their product. This is the way business works. I'm happy with mine. I also have a PC and believe me this is nothing compared to what happens there. People are not so dumb that they will be "confused" about which version is best for them.

the 360 is turning into a pc, it used to be a console, now there are upgrades less than 1 year apart from the next, don't get me wrong I love the over-all experience the 360 brings, downloads, arcade games, achievements and so on, I just wish they were more reliable.

Well mine is perfectly reliable. Not a single problem since launch. You're making it sound like every 360 dies within a year.

Its simply not true. None of my friends have had any problems with their 360's either.

Sony is by no means an exempt to this criticism, but although to a much lesser degree. Most of their changes are just with hard drive sizes...

ub3r_logic

Wait... what? Sony is by far the biggest offender, followed by Microsoft. Nintendo is the only one who makes one sku and sticks with it. Microsoft and Sony just love to squeeze every last penny out of consumers. A casual gamer doesn't know all the different versions... if they really wanted a 360 or PS3, they would've bought one without a second thought to harddrive space, backward compatibility, etc.

Anyways, Microsoft's aren't that bad at all. Core, Premium, and Elite... what's wrong with that? Nothing, compared to Sony's old 20gig, their now fading 60gb, their new 40gb, and their 80gb pack-in, with apparently another sku already rumored. Now, 4 skus in ONE year? That'd ridiculous. Microsoft, however, has 3 skus (soon to be 4 with "arcade" in...what, three years? Much better.

(I didn't count the Halo one because really, that's nothing new except for a color change.)

And thats messed up, you cant even get the normal one where i live anymore.

As for getting angry becouse they are improving the productI gont get. Its alot better when its getting better. But when they remove things from something, thet pisses me off.

As for the forth SKU from MS, i think it is replacing the Core version. Atleast thats whats done here. The Core isent anywhere anymore. Only the Arcade with 5 games, Wireless Controler, anda mem card 256mb. This is in norway.

The different between Sony and MS is Sony is replacing SKUs, MS is just adding on or renaming. Currently there are only 2 units in production for the PS3, the 40 and 80, but for the 360 there is, what... 4 SKUs? SOny isnt adding features becuase they dont need to, theyve had them in since Day 1, MS however isnt in that position. Also Sonys many SKUs are to do with the quickly changing motherboard of the unit in thei goal of getting the price to an acceptable margin while still making a profit by march, something they will indeed do. You can get a PS3 now for 1/3 less than on launch day, and for less than a year thats astounding improvments.

I just wish people would stop saying "SKU". Most people don't even use the acronym properly.
