they sure do break a lot.i mean look at the "broken xbox 360 thread" that has 5000+ posts! but one of the reasons why they break is people don't take care of it.

Yep, my january 07 console just died on me. If you get a 360 don't even think about voiding your warranty, it will be your best friend.

It seems that the new once are a bit stronger but it's hard to say what the toal of number of PRODs is these days. But Microsoft has increased the (free) waranty to 3 years now, so if it does get PROD then you can get a new one (HDD can be seperated so you won't lose any data).

Retailers are estimating that about 20-25% of 360's are busting. MS provided a warranty though so either way, you're covered. Nowhere near all are busting contrary to fanboy dribble so if you want one, get one. If you get the RROD a year or more down the road then send it in and you'll have a replacement within 3 weeks. It's that simple. They are trying to fix the problem...they can't just snap their fingers and all is fixed though. It'll take some time.

Every Xbox 360 that is sold is covered for 3 years from the time you purchased it. So, no. Your "warranty" won't be void...and far from it.

it is covered by the warranty, and if the warranty is voided, that means its no longer covered. ie. you cant pull apart ur xbox and mess everything up inside and put it back together, send it in, and theyll give u a new one..

In time, all electronics fail somehow. This problem will never go away.. just take care of your system and hopefully you can avoid system failure.

lol look here gents - it's not about electronics breaking eventually - everyone knows that. What he's asking is if there is still a flaw in the design of the box that makes them redlight. And there's really no way to spin it - yes there is still the flaw, Microsoft admitted it's because of a design flaw so it's not simply that people aren't "taking care" of it. But they made good on their flaw and extented the warranty to 3 years.

So, the answer to his question is *yes* they are still breaking.

The comment would be that you'll have a lot of fun on the console regardless :)
So your choice really. And no one is really sure whether or not they have fixed the flaw, there are new GPU's rumored- as well as a heatsink added, but that has yet to be confirmed.

I recently had to have mine serviced. Good ol' rings of death, too. I was watching a movie and after 5 minutes it froze, so I restarted it and the same thing happened. Third time's a charm, right? WRONG! On the third try I got the rings. Anyway, I didn't have it for Halo 3 at first, but as a consolation Microsoft gave me a month of gold membership, which was perfect for H3. This is the second Xbox 360 I've had to send them, and both times it two a little over 2 weeks from the time I shipped to the day I got it back, so overall I'm pretty satisfied.

amidst all this flaw design breaking, I can't believe this console is still a hot-seller. evidently MS is so big now that its impervious to goofs as big as this.

I also at some point had 1 ring of red but it went away after I turned it off *shrug*

I am going to get the elite around christmas anyway.

Mine went two and a half months and the disk drive went out. I got a new one now with the HDMI I noticed it runs a lot cooler than my other one. It was built in 9-2007. My first 360 was built 10-2006. Hopefully they have improved the one I have now.

buy one manufactured after august with the hdmi port they have a new heatsink in themjimjim350

That's the one I have and it's ALOT more quiet then the older models as well ( I know because I did a test). It seems to me MOST people complaining there consoles have died are the ones who got them BEFORE the HDMI ports were added. MEANING they are the older models with the initial issues. Also people send there's in for repairs only to receive ANOTHER older console in it's place which will in turn also RROD one day. Mine was manufactured in July of 07 and I have ZERO worries it will break on me.

Wait, are the 3 year warranties free? I'm getting a 360 soon but I thought that the 3 yr warranty cost like, $60 or something. That would be really cool if they're free, then I can get Halo 3 or something.
