When I first bought my 360, I expected nothing different in terms of putting in a disc and being able to play through the game. However, it seems like I NEED my HDD or I will not be able to play some games. This really annoys me, I should be able to play the entire game from just the disc without installing it to the hard drive.

GTAIV: Freezes every 11 minutes, installed to HDD, works perfectly.

FlatOut Ultimate Carnage: Was freezing at a certain loading screen and at most loading screens online. Installed to HDD and it works perfectly.

Alone in the Dark: The end of one level would never load. I spent an hour re-doing everything and consulting a walkthrough only to find out it just wasn't loading. I installed it to my HDD, it loaded just fine.

Splinter Cell Double Agent: The game would freeze at the beginning of every match. Installed it to my HDD, works perfectly.

Does anyone else get problems like this? My discs are in great condition by the way, with hardly a scratch on any of them. I thought GTAIV was an exception, but I've been buying more and more games and I keep finding certain qualities in the games that make them UNPLAYABLE without my HDD. It doesn't make sense, as other games such as Gears 1 and 2, Pure, Prey, Frontlines Fuel of War, Stuntman Ignition and The Darkness will work just fine without me needing to install them.

I have had my 360 elite since launch and I just got RROD yesterday, so I had it for like 2 years without any problems and all of a sudden it starts to freeze.

Not bad then... that's quite the time of gaming, most go out year-year and a half :D

Good thing I got it before the warranty ran out.

Mine always froze during GTA IV every 45 minutes or so but it just randomly stopped doing it one day.

I find that the HDD only improves the noise the console makes, I noticed no differences in load times.

My 360 is 1 month old and I have had the exact same problems with RE5. It would freeze at the loading screen between chapters, so I installed it to the HDD and so far so good.

Methinks the RROD is a bit overplayed and it is too bad Microsoft has never, AFAIK, put out a report discussing the technical details of what leads to the RROD failure. Then again, why would they?

I've never downloaded the games to my hardrive and the only game that's frozen for me is my Oblivion and that was because the disc was dirty. It's prolly your disc drive.

If it's only freezing when reading from the disc then, as others said, it's probably a problem with the disc drive. It could be as simple as a dirty lens.... do you smoke in your house? Is there a lot of dust? If so that could likely be the culprit. I don't know which, if any, lens cleaners are safe for the 360... but if you use one make sure it says it is safe for the console.

I had problems with my PS1 and I used a DVD lens cleaner on it and it made it worse. When I called Sony they told me some crap about how the lens was more sensitive and scratches easier so you're not supposed to use any lens cleaner disc on it. Since then I've never used one on a console.... but usually if my lens gets that bad it's well after the warranty is up and I just take it apart and clean it manually or with canned air.

Oh, and in response to the title question... my Xbox has frozen about once a month or so since I bought it just over a year ago. It's never led to any serious problems (so far), and I know a few of those times it had something to do with streaming from the PC. Most of the time it'll just randomly freeze while gaming. Fallout 3 froze a lot for me... but I cleared the cache on the HDD and it stopped.

The 360 is an awesome system... easily the best out of the current gen. But it was built like a piece of junk. They're practically disposable, and everyone knows it except for the fanboys in denial.

Dust could be a problem, but this was happening three days after I got my 360 with GTAIV. I don't think it could have collected dust that quickly. As for smoking, nobody in my household smokes, so that is out of the question as well. Thanks for all your imput everyone! Perhaps I'll give Microsoft a call and ask them what I should do, if anything. If they can't do anything about it at least it's pretty easy to deal with. :P
