Are the RROD issues really that bad?

a casual gaming family - done the usual gamecube, ps2, Wii routine. Thinking of either the Xbox or PS3. I know its just about impossible to find info comparing the two without the start of flame wars, but the biggest thing that troubles me are all the posts over the years about the RROD with the Xbox. I am not seeing similar warning posts for the PS3. Will this, what appears to be a fatal flaw with the Xbox ,be resolved? I've read posts about checking boxes for the new circuit board, notes that Amazon is selling the old version even though the item description says is the new one. If I am to spend $300-400 for a gaming platform, I need to see some info that I am not gonna get screwed by the Xbox. Would really appreciate some non flame advice. Thx !

It's still present, but no where near what it once was, so long as you get one of the jaspers.

They arent as freakuwent anymore. And since you are more of a casual gamer you probably wont use it that much to overheat. Even if it does break microsoft will fix it free of charge.

2 and a half years I've had mine. I play every single day anywhere from 3 up to 10 hours. Other than sounding like a semi truck, I've never had a single problem out of mine. Especially buying one of the newer Xbox consoles, where the issues have been somewhat addressed, you are at much less risk than if you had bought a launch console. Just don't buy a used Xbox and you'll be fine. If you are that worried buy it from a store that offers a warranty, I bought mine from Best Buy and got a 2 year replacement plan for 35$, I've never had to use it but I've heard great stories about the Best Buy replacement service.

try for a jasper. if you go into stores and purchase it in person, you should have an easier chance of getting the newest chipset, jasper, which is said to mostly eliminate the rrod problem. if that doesnt work, try ebay where you can actually ask the seller when it was made. thats the clue to tell you. i believe jaspers where made after 2009, for sure. do a google search. it will tell you that plus what the volts should say on the power brick

People can be in denial all they want.. The fact still remains that RROD is still common place.. It was a design flaw in the unit itself... I love the 360 and the online service , but I wont deny that there still is quite a problem with E74 .... Lets hope MS learns from this on the next console they design...

I've personally never had a red ring, though my disc drive died on me. Had it 2.5 years so far.

another problem is the disc drives not reading games. Does anyone know if the 2009 models eliminate this problem?

I've had my xbox for 2 1/2 years and no RROD yet (knock on wood). As long as you get one of the new jasper chips, which I don't have unfortunately, it will cut the chance down a lot. Just so you know the PS3 has YLOD errors and sometimes won't read games. Just remember any electronics will break if not properly maintained.

15th!!! Oh wait, 152K gamerscore... no wonder they're played to death! That wasn't a slight in anyway, just a casual observation, btw. But either way, that's bad luck. I had to replace mine twice, and oddly enough, the last one was replaced with a 1st generation, which has been running fine for 2 years. The RRoD problem really is hit-or-miss. It seems to be the (un)luck of the draw...

It won't happen if you take care of your xbox. Don't leave it on overnight, in the sun, don't spill anything on it etc.

you would think that after 14 RRODs, he would have switched to ps3... or learnt to take care of his console

If you go the 360 route this above would be a smart thing to do. If you have a 1080p HDTV then do yourself and family a favor and get a PS3/Blue Ray player. I personally bought an elite which I had to send in 5 months later only to get a refurb back which had clearly been subjected to tons of smoke (fans were accually a brown color). Got rid of it and bought a PS3. Keep in mind I had a launch 360 core console for over a year no problems and wanted the HDMI connection so bought the elite and well huge mistake.

Not really, try googling how they fix RROD. They fix the melted solder points and put extra thermal paste on the gpu. It's not surprising once you recieve that first refurb you are stuck in the recycle program.

This should make you think about buying something you have to go out of your way to use.

1. I own a PS3, PC and a Wii not just a 360. 2. I take care of my stuff.. my 360 has plenty of air around it I don't move it etc. People just can't seem to accept that the hardware in the 360 is complete garbage and believe all the bs Microsoft says. No "Jasper" doesn't fix **** either.. they have said that every time they released a new one and guess what? it doesn't fix it.

Yep.
They added the E-74 to their 3year warranty deal they have with the RRoD.
So, it's enough of a problem now.

That happens to be what my console got last.

I agree with kingrich06. Get that Best Buy PiP.
If the console goes down in price after you get it, and it breaks, you get to spend whatever money is left extra in store.:D

I made sure to search the whole section for a Jasper 360.
As, my last one was a Falcon, and I didn't want to get another one of those.
