Do you think five dollars worth of points is actually fair considering that xbox live for original games is completely shutting down?

They're also giving out free Games on Demand depending how long you've had the service

Look, Microsoft went above and beyond supporting the original XBOX for years to the point that they can't hold back the 360 anymore.

It's been 4 years since the XBOX went belly up and it's time to move on. There's no excuse anyone can come up with for Microsoft to support last gen's hardware online when it means the 360 can't move forward.

All you have to do is take a look at the Windows 7 operating system for cell phones to see that the Live network can be expanded a whole lot more this generation.

Microsoft didn't stop XBOX games from being played, they just stopped them from being online so they could introduce new things to the network

It's time to move on

I was just looking for people's opinions. Personally, it doesn't matter all to much to me. A little sad that I can't play halo 2 anymore, but I'll live. Actually, I didn't expect anything from microsoft to be honest, so it was a pleasant surprise.

I am curious on how they handle the few ppl I am sure only have live to play on the original xbox and don't have a 360. I assume they just give them back the remainder of the year payment.

they can do what they want they own every bit of xbox live servers. be happy with your 5 bucks and 3 months of gold. I don't care because if what Microsoft said why they shutting it down is true then i'm all for it... BTW if you dont know Microsoft said the servers on the first xbox was preventing them to do more with the servers on the 360...

P.S why burn down Bill gates house? why not just kick him feed him to the sharks that cover his privet island out and enjoy the American dream?

I think it would be neat if they could opensource some of the original Live code so that people could set up servers for old Xbox games if they wished. As for getting rid of Xbox support, I'm glad if it means a higher friends cap and more features.

Yeah, I wonder if that would be an option. Otherwise, I'm sure things like Xlink Kai will become at least a little more popular.

That's what I've been wondering. I'm going on my 2nd year of Xbox Live Gold consistantly, and haven't recieved anything (have also played Halo 2 on this service). No complaints, been very happy with the service, just wondering how exactly this works.

If you didn't get an Email now chances are you wont be getting them

For people who put a significant amount of time on the Live service Microsoft is offering points and games and month of Gold to compensate users for losing the ability to play XBOX games online

Yes and no. Personally I don't play Halo 2 much. Only every once in a while to check it out. In my case I guess it was fair. I don't play it much any more and they gave me 400 ms points, three additional months of x-box live gold and I'm supposed to get a code to the Reach beta at some point. I already have ODST so I'll give the code to one of my friends who don't have ODST. While I appreciate it I still think Halo 2 deserves a little better. It's pretty much responsible for xbox live's success and a fair amount of people still play it to this day. And I'm sure alot of people would say it's not fair since not everyone got the apology stuff, but those are people who don't even play original xbox games so it doesn't matter either way for them. They're just going to complain about getting something Microsoft doesn't owe them. And on Microsoft's part technically they didn't have to do anything. They could have pulled the plug and said nothing. When they took down the DLC servers early they were generous enough to put them back up so that the Halo 2 players could have a fair chance to download all the content between now and when the servers go down. And now they went the extra mile and gave the loyal players something as an apology. So I'm grateful that they were willing to do this much.

I thought it was very generous to give 3 months of live free, the points are nice also. They didn't have to do that and although it's sad to see originals go theres so much to play right now I won't remember in a week from now. Thanks MS, the 3 months def helped me! :D

I've been a LIVE subscriber since 2003. I played Halo 2 online the day it launched, and played it regularly ever since. I didn't receive an e-mail to say I'd be getting free points or games. I've played 2000 games of Halo 2 online. Is that not enough?

I think it's almost fair. 800 MSP would have been better. But good nonetheless.

At least it's better than what you get from EA when they shut down servers for games which are about one - two years old. :P

People keep saying $5 when its actually a $25 plus value. $5 in points, $20 for 3 months of Live, and the Reach Beta is priceless, (which I didn't recieve) for removing the ability to play arcaic games which majority of 360 users dont play anyway. Yeah I'm happy... BUTT seeing as they'll just add more facebook/twitter crap, things that add NOTHING to the gaming experience and it'll in no way improve connectivity or latency how will it improve the service other then freeing up space for more ads or gimmicky crap?

I've been a subscriber since the very beginning of live played the originals on my 360 and didn't get an email. Something tells me this wasn't thought out that well.
