I still find it interesting that the 360 chose to use DVD for games with it's limited storage capacity (at least in comparisson to HD and Blue Ray) but I'm wondering what the average size of a 360 game is anyway? Is it even an issue? I'm assuming they utelize dual layering on games? I don't know much other than an average single layer dvd can only hold around 4GB, right? Don't worry, this is not a systems war debate. I have a 360 and I'm constantly impressed at the quality and size of games but you have to admit that there is a great discrepancy in info storage capacity between DVD and BlueRay.

it really dosent matter, Lost Oddesy came out on multiple disks i heard, I dont mind having a game like that.....PC has and still is providing games by that means. As long as we dont pay by the disc, im fine.

I doubt it will be an issue and by the time games are so huge we would be putting in the next disk every 20 mins. A new set of systems would be released. Let hope that is many years away....

I was watching the PS3 video interview from the game developers conference and they were bragging about how "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune" filled up a full single layer of BlueRay (25GB) but after watching video reviews of the game it appears to be an average current-gen game that the 360 should be more than capable of handling so I'd very much like to know what in this game takes up 25GB?!? If Sony is producing games that take up so much space but result in end products that could be done on the 360 utelizing dual-layer dvd, what is all that space for? Is it all just untapped potential for truely HUGE games or what?

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune - 25Gb

Lost Odessy - 8.5Gb x 4 discs = 34Gb

Since the PS3 is only using single layer discs, it is ridiculous to talk about the difference in size of the discs, anything you can put on a single layer Blu ray disc you can put on 3 dvd-dl's

I dont think that it was the same game, but I heard a while back that Sony was bragging about some game that filled up the whole disc and it turned out that a lot of the space was taken up by uncompressed video and other extras. It is also easy to take up more space with a game if the code is not streamlined and optimized to a system's hardware, which would also make for longer load times and graphical artifacts. The size of a game is far from being a detemining factor of how good a game will be, in fact it can be the opposite, because MS has to be aware of size, they have to really optimize the content that goes onto thier discs, but sony can just throw whatever they have onto a blu ray disc and call it good.

compression technology is ever evolving, until they can't fit the average game on a single dvd i won't worry.

In the same video they mentioned the possibility of using dual-layer BlueRay for games which would put it up to 50GB. Are all BlueRay players (including the PS3) inherently able to read multi-layer BlueRay discs? It's funny because the Sony rep in the video makes a jab (disguised as a compliment) about Gears of War 3 being so big that it could only fit on BlueRay and then when the 360 rep is interviewed afterwords he makes a funny comment about the sony rep being such an expert on the subject and that xbox is very happy with working only on dvd.

I agree that multiple discs is one solution but ultimately it would be easier and more cost effective to have them on one disc. Especially if you have a game that allows you to traverse seamlessly through all areas you don't want to have to change discs...that would have to be one huge game world though!

I wouldn't worry about it, Gears 3 will probably come out on the next generation of consoles, which will all have blu ray drives, since they will be cheap enough by then. I believe that all blu ray players can read dual layer discs, but not all can read more than that, there has been a big stink about that lately, because they are supposedly going to start releasing movies on 3-layer discs and some player won't read them.
