No More Netflix Rentals.......

Netflix Drops HD DVD, Will Only Carry Blu-ray
Source: Netflix February 11, 2008

Netflix is the latest company to drop HD DVD and back the Blu-ray Disc format. Here is company's release from today:

With the industry now having picked a winner in the face-off between the two competing high- definition DVD formats, Netflix, Inc., the world's largest online movie rental service, today said that it will move toward stocking high-def DVDs exclusively in the Blu-ray format.

Citing the decision by four of the six major movie studios to publish high-def DVD titles only in the Sony-developed Blu-ray format, Netflix said that as of now it will purchase only Blu-ray discs and will phase out by roughly year's end the alternative high-def format, HD DVD, developed by Toshiba.

Since the first high-definition DVDs came on the market in early 2006, Netflix has stocked both formats. But the company said that in recent months the industry has stated its clear preference for Blu-ray and that it now makes sense for the company to initiate the transition to a single format.

"The prolonged period of competition between two formats has prevented clear communication to the consumer regarding the richness of the high-def experience versus standard definition," said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer for Netflix. "We're now at the point where the industry can pursue the migration to a single format, bring clarity to the consumer and accelerate the adoption of high-def. Going forward, we expect that all of the studios will publish in the Blu-ray format and that the price points of high-def DVD players will come down significantly. These factors could well lead to another decade of disc-based movie watching as the consumer's preferred means."

Added Mr. Sarandos: "From the Netflix perspective, focusing on one format will enable us to create the best experience for subscribers who want high- definition to be an important part of how they enjoy our service."

While only a portion of Netflix subscribers have elected to receive high- def DVDs, a majority of those subscribers have chosen Blu-ray over HD DVD. As part of the transition to Blu-ray, the company said it will acquire no new HD DVDs but that its current HD DVD inventory would continue to rent until the discs' natural life cycle takes them out of circulation in the coming months.

When Warner Home Video announced last month that by the end of this year it will release high-def titles exclusively in the Blu-ray format, it joined fellow majors Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and Buena Vista Home Entertainment in endorsing Blu-ray. Currently, the two remaining majors, Paramount Home Entertainment and Universal Studios Home Entertainment, publish in the HD DVD format.

Netflix currently stocks over 400 Blu-ray titles, having recently added popular releases such as "Across the Universe" (Sony), "Gone Baby Gone" (Buena Vista) and the Academy Award nominated "Michael Clayton" (Warner Bros.). Blu- ray titles scheduled for release in the next month or so include the Academy Award nominated "No Country for Old Men" (Walt Disney), "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" (Sony) and "Alvin and the Chipmunks" (20th Century Fox).

Best Buy has also decided to push Blu-Ray over HDDVD. Although Best Buy will still carry both for the time being.

I really dont prefer one over the other but hope this kind of stuff pushes companies to decide HD DVD or BluRay and get it over. I hate looking up movies and realizing they are only on HD DVD. I use to have a HD DVD player for 360 but decided to wait and see which was going to win but just bought a PS3 so now it looks like im going with BR.

Yeah, but you arent FORCED to buy the HDDVD add-on, and you sure dont need it for any of the games.

The 360 doesn't play HD-DVDs...but the HD-DVD player add-on does. This does not effect the 360 in anyway. All Microsoft has to do is switch to Blu-ray. Did the early adopters of HD-DVD get shafted here? I say no...they still can enjoy their HD-DVDs anytime anywhere. It can not be looked at as the failed media and in the future can become a collectors item....maybe...

HD-DVD is old technology. It should have never been released to the public in the first place.

I'm glad Netflix and other companies are finallying making the right decision and abandonding it. No one should have supported it in the first place.

so how long til we see an external Blu-ray player for the 360 :p

I have my 360 for playing games, not for watching films. I don't really care who "wins" the HD format war, as long as the war is won and only one format exists - it just makes it so much easier for everyone buying them.

dont really matter for 360, sony already said microsoft can use blue ray if they want. makes sense for sony to do that because they make more money anyways.

im not bothered which format wins, until they just one standard and the players are down to comparable prices of what dvd players were 3 years ago and the disc prices catch up then i wont buy neither. i download most my movies anyways

Well regardless of where you console loyalty rests it's just nice to see a winner. Competing formats like this are good for no one.

I'm an HD-DVD supporter. I had bought the 360 add on, along with a stand-alone player. I feel pretty shafted. HD-DVD player sales have been smacking BluRay for months now....and yet all these people keep dropping from them. It just shows the power of the corporate world, making decisions for the people. HD-DVD should've won. Its taken BluRay a LONG time to get to the level of matching HD-DVD. Not to mention...look how many early adopters got hosed by them. 'Oh im sorry...that $1200 player you bought 6 months ago...yea...it won't play your new movies. Sorry! :)

Screw sony and blu. I'm sticking with regular DVD's. I refuse to give in to there crap format.

FearTheRain
Lots of people say this, but there's nothing to really back that up. If you research both formats, the only difference you'll find is in disc capacity. While disc capacity will mean something in the future for videogames, as games are beginning to routinely approach disc limits on the Xbox 360, its not so meaningful for movies. We're talking about 15GB of capacity for a single player HD DVD, compared to about 25GB for a single layer Blu-ray disc. This equates to about 4-5 hours of HD video for HD DVD, and about 7-8 hours for Blu-ray (these are realistic estimates, look it up). Most movies aren't in the 4-5 hours range, we're generally talking about 2-3 hours for the longer movies. Other than capacity, the formats are virtually IDENTICAL (sound quality, etc). The reason Blu-ray will win is marketing, and the color blue. Not because its "newer" or "superior" technology. The average couch potatoe doesn't have a clue about the specs of each format anyway, they just see these nice commercials from Sony or supporting studious with fake testimonials of "how much clearer Blu-ray is than HD DVD", which makes no sense because its just resolutions, lol. Oh, but the disc is blue!!!!!! I'm not picking a side here, just trying to show how funny consumers are.
