That was a terrible review for Dead Island. I has great 4 player coop fun, its a little rough around the edges buts that what we were all expecting. The reviewer says that the game is a just a rehash of the original, while the original got a 7 this gets a 4? Where was this reviewer for the past 40 Call of duty's? Yes, Call of duty is a more polished game than this, but it has been the same since 2007 and it doesnt get marked down. This is just a great example of how bad the reviews have gotten here and why I dont even pay attention to reviews anymore.

I believe nearly all the reviews of Dead Island: Riptide have been negative. So, it's not just GameSpot that trashed the game. As far is it being a rehash...well, it is. They pretty much recycled 90% of the assets from the original game. That'd be acceptable in DLC or an old school expansion pack - appropriately priced at $30 or less - but for what's being sold as a full-fledged game? It's unforgivable. Furthermore, the game suffers from all the little glitches and annoyances that plagued the original. At least the original had some originality going for it - the analog combat controls and the interesting juxtaposition of zombies run amok in a tropical paradise - that allowed you to look past the rough edges. But when you new game is virtually the same damn thing, when there seems to be no evidence that time and money were spent on creating new art or mechanics, there's no reason the final product shouldn't be polished to a blinding gleam of perfection. There's nothing to Dead Island: Riptide that couldn't have been done by a modding community - or, rather, one or two people - in a shorter span of time, with greater polish, and for less money (read: no money) than what Techland produced and is charging $50 for. The 4.0 score might be a little harsh, but it's not far off the mark. The game really doesn't deserve more than a 5.0, at the absolute highest.

Few things 1) It's someone else's opinion. This should be pretty obvious 2) The reviewer of this game wasn't the reviewer of the original, and rehashing a game that was barely good in 2011 doesn't help in 2013 3) CoD is highly polished to many and doesn't need to change up its main gameplay because of this, and your generalization of CoD can apply to many other series

Rented the game. So far the game just feels like a DLC of the first. For me as well, had couple glitch issues - lose complete game sound(not the tv or xbox, its the game) and had what felt like a lightning storm lock up of the game last night. The new stuff doesnt seem all that great either - chainsaw that breaks(out of gas) after such a tiny short time even if you dont use it again anything. Personally would had liked new characters to use and maybe different location such as a luxury liner ship. (dont know of all the areas so far as only in Chapter 3)

I didnt think the first game was absolutely terrible, but it was not good enough for me to consider buying Riptide.  Also, I personally do not like the reviews here, but I love the forums which is what keeps me coming back.

The first third of Dead Island, the resort area and the ruined city, was pretty great. The first few hours of playing, getting into the analog controls and exploring the world, were actually a lot of fun. I thought it was really satisfying, that sense of zombie apocalypse survival that came from using whatever items were on hand as weapons, using a boat oar or a broomstick until it broke to pieces and then grabbing the next one you came across, until you started to find weapons that were worth repairing. It wasn't without its flaws, and I wished they'd let you just experiment with crafting your own items instead of forcing you to use mods, but it satisfied that 'start with nothing and scrounge for survival' vibe that I wanted from that sort of game. And the resort and the city were both open enough environments that you felt like you could really explore. But once things got to the jungle...it was pretty much all downhill from there. I had a good time with most of the original game, but I didn't walk away wanting the exact same thing - or worse, just the second half of the original game - all over again. Actually, what I came away from Dead Island wanting was for Bethesda to steal those analog controls and do their own zombie apocalypse game. I wanted a Skyrim-like, truly open world experience, a world filled with dozens upon dozens of secrets and random encounters and events, with hundreds of locations to explore, and the survival element taken to the next level where you didn't just scrounge for weapons but needed to hunt for food, with a crafting system that went beyond those silly mods. I wanted the Dead Island model to evolve. Had they tried that, even if it was a horrible broken trainwreck, I would've been happier than seeing them just churn out more of the same.
