I don't understand why the Xbox 360 wasn't built fully backwards compatible. I could play all my Playstation games on my PS2... Yet the only Xbox game I play on my 360 is Halo 2.

Because the 360 relies on software emulation to play XBOX games, which means MS has to pay employess to actually write code to make them compatible. The PS2 had the actual chips that the original Playstation used for playing games on it's mainboard, so it was hardware based. Sony did the same thing with the launch 20gb and 60gb systems, before changing to software emulation for the 80gb to cut back costs on each PS3 unit. then BC was removed entirely from the 40gb models to further reduce manufacturing costs.
