The latest post in the HDTV hardware thread is 3 weeks old, so I'm going to post this question here (please be lenient Mods - I need an answer). For those of you who have your 360 running on a 1080p television, please contribute.

I am getting a new HDTV and I'm down to 2 choices: a 50" 720p Pioneer plasma (CNET says is the year's best plasma in that size)and a 60" 1080p Sony SXRD projection (CNET says is the years best projection - period). CNET likes them both about equal (saying that the 720p display really doesn't matter), and the prices are roughly sixes. So my determination hinges on how its going to make my 360 look.

For those of you who play your 360 on a 1080p display, how is it? Is it a huge jump over 720? Some difference (if so, how much)? No difference really to the naked eye? The reviews go on and on about the picture quality and color of the Pioneer, but there's something about having 1080p in what most say is the year's best projection tv appeals to me, and I wonder if I'll be missing something.

Any opinions from those who can opine would be helpful. Thanks.

When I played my 360 on a bigger screen in 1080p, I will admit, the picture was amazing, but the jaggies in the games were unbearibly noticeable.

I put the tv into 720p mode after playing in 1080p, and there is a slight difference. The difference isn't that noticeable, but if I had to choose between the two and the 720p was considerably cheaper, then I would buy that one. Other than that, I would buy the 1080p because of its larger size and the future uses that could be made of such high definition.

I actually prefer playing my games on 720, it just looks better to me. It's really all personal preference but I'd say go with the 60" because it's bigger and unless your really anal about the resolutions you probably wouldn't notice a huge difference at all

720p will always look better on the 360 because that is the 360's native resoultion. If you take the 1080p it will have to stretch the picture to make it fit which will drop the quality a little. Does your 360 even have an HDMI output?

Honestly it really depends on what you want to get out of it. If you go with 1080p your basically future proofing it. Plus if you ever want to get an HD DVD or blue ray player you will be missing out on the 1080p if you choose the 720p.

Yes - I have a 360 Elite, so it does have HDMI output. Will it still downgrade the resolution?

As for the 1080p vs 720p question, someone already stated that the 360's native resolution is 720p so it will look better in that resolution but 1080p and the larger screen would be better for movies and if you get a PS3, which I think can do 1080p better than the 360. I would go for the Sony though as my in-laws have the 50" model and it is fantastic.

I bought the 60" Sony SXRD, granted it was a floor model and it lasted less than 24 hours after taking it home. I took it back and got a Toshiba 65". It is 1080p and has so much a better picture than the Sony did, and it was cheaper.

I have a 1080i samsung 30" hdtv. Not the best hdtv out there but even though I heard people say 720p is better than 1080i I still play it on 1080i. Basically because when I bought the hdmi cable for my new premium hdmi 360. The 360 set itself up to be played at 1080i. Guess that's what my tv and 360 agreed on. So I don't want to argue with them.lol. And the picture? I can very much tell the differene from the component on my tv. Waaay better. But I still do sometimes wonder if I should change the setting to 720p and see if I can notice any difference from 1080i but i'm too lazy to do it and my tv and 360 might get mad at me.

The native resolution of the 360 is 720p as has been stated. If you get the 1080p set you have two options: set the 360 to 1080p so it does the upconversion from 720p or leave it 720p and let the TV upconvert it to 1080p. One might look better than the other and my guess would be let the TV do it. Either way there is going to be a conversion taking place somewhere. HD-DVD and Blueray's native resolution is 1080p. The max resolution you'll get from your cable or satellite tv company is 1080i. The 1080p set would be better for these things. If you get the 720p set there is going to be a conversion taking place again. Decide if one size screen is better suited to the size of the room it's going to be in. Sitting too close to a large screen will likely produce the screen door effect where you can see individual pixels. Personally, I would go with the 60" 1080p. Whatever you do, go to the store and look at them in person before buying anything. Getting your eyes on the sets may make the decision for you. Also, play with the picture settings if they'll let you to get it closer to real world settings. The in-store settings are overly bright and colorful to try to catch your attention.

I can't comment on the two sets you mentioned above but take my post as it is. Compare 720p and 1080p on the same set. Like my Vizio 1080p doesn't even come close to my downstairs Sony Bravia set at 720p. You really get what you pay for in HDTVs and I cannot stress this enough:

INVEST IN LCDTECHNOLOGY!

Plasma, has excellent picture quality but LCD is not far behind and in fact they can probably be compared on the same level. I changed out my DLP and plasmas a couple years back and now all my TVs are LCDs. It's a proven technology that started with computer monitors and the longevity and durability is unmatched. If you play ever so often and you have your mind set on plasma then go get it, however, if you play for hours on end then an LCD set is your best bet.

Just my dos centavos.

Definately the Sony SXRD. They are in my opinion the best TV's on the market.
