For anyone interested, Best Buy is having a special deal that includes 42" Panasonic plasma, Xbox 360 Eite holiday bundle and Avatar the game all for only 699$.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Panasonic+VIERA+Plasma+HDTV,+Xbox+360+Elite+%26+Avatar+Gaming+Package/9999121400050002.p?id=pcmprd121500050002&skuId=9999121400050002&st=xbox%20elite&lp=3&cp=1

If you were considering buying a new TV for gaming, this is a great deal. The tv by itself is around 600-700$, but with the deal you also get a brand new Elite with Jasper and 3 other games.

That's a sweet deal. Even though I bought my TV earlier in the year. I should have waited.

The two problems I see are: - 720p - Plasma The 360 has long been able to (up/re)scale games to 1080p, even those that didn't explicitly support them. Just seems stupid to go with a 720p TV now. Also, because it is plasma, that thing will run very HOT, and use up a lot more electricity than an equivalent LCD, and certainly more than an LED. But eh, a free console with it? I suppose it's not all bad.

Plasma is a plus, not a minus Yeah it uses a little more energy but the picture quality beats any LCD TV. I have the 1080p 42" panny from 2007 and that thing is the best TV I have ever had. The colors on a Plasma display are excellent along with great black levels. Also, there is no problem with response time like LCD's. I have seen the 720p ones as well and honestly for the 360 thats all you need and its a good deal. I have yet to see an LED tv, I have heard mixed reviews about them, but the fact that they are still top dollar right now, even a 1080p Plasma is a better buy still as long as it's Panasonic or a Pioneer, which the latter no longer exists. So I would say it's an excellent deal, maybe the game isn't so much but hey, its free.

You know 1080p only matters for screen sizes over 50"and viewing distances below 10 feet. An average gamer won't even see a difference, especially if it's a 42"TV.

And plasmas are actually the best for video gaming. They offer better black levels, contrast, crisper colors, faster refresh rates, response time and no annoying input lag while playing video games. The newer models do not waste as much electricity as before and they also don't have the "burn-in" problem. This is an energy star qualified 2009 Panasonic model, it's not some crappy 3rd rate product. Comparable LCDs also cost a lot more then their plasma counterparts and offer much less. I would personally take a great 42 Panny plasma over a washed out LCD any day.

A little? Try a lot. Not to mention all that heat pouring out the back of it to heat up the room as you're using it. Plasma TV's now are just simply like the Hummer H3 in a parking lot full of subcompacts. Hopelessly hogging and irresponsible. At least I have been fortunate enough to see an LED TV, and pretty much at that point, any and all benefits a Plasma had (other than price, mind you) are negated.

You must have really bad eyesight if you need a 50" to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p. Plasmas also still have burn-in issues by the nature of their technology, that LCD does not. Yes, newer units have improved considerably in the burn-in and power consumption, but they are still by nature using a lot more and burning up your room while you're at it. Hell, here at home, the homeowner had finally had to unplug his aging rear-projection TV and put an LCD TV in its place. From that move already, saved about $50/month on the electric bill. I could only imagine how much higher it would go back up to if it was replaced with a Plasma instead. And as I said, LED TV's pretty much eliminate all the advantages Plasma had, except for price. And even then they still cook your ass alive with how much heat just pours out of those vents.

But still would you rather have an inferior picture just because of an energy bill? It's not like you are paying hundreds of dollars just for that plasma.

Except you are. Or at least, I am, because my rent is affected by the electricity bill. So with a Plasma, I would have the increased energy usage for it, and the increased usage of the central A/C to keep temperatures under control. I already have a 60gig (ps3, I mean) that can turn my room into a personal sauna. I don't need my TV to be able to do that, too.

Is it really that bad? I got 42 Panny plasma in living room and never noticed it gets so hot. I'm gonna put the new 42 plasma in my small room, think that will turn it into microwave considering i will be using it with 360 and PS3?

You can save over 100 times the amount of money by just turning all the lights off in the houes 24/7 ( except the room your in ), then by buying a LCD.

Ever feel the back of one that's been running for a while? I at least have been able to, because the wholesaler stores that also sell TV's have them fairly out in the open, so that people can basically look and feel all around them. The Plasma sets have always had the hottest exhaust air coming out since CRT's stopped being made.

Already do that. Electric bill for the whole house is still over $200 a month except in rare occasions like when a roommate is out for a good part of said month. :(

You're fairly clueless aren't you ? The Panasonics V10 (plasma) in comparison to the Samsung 8500 (LED-LCD) is a $20-$50 electricity bill difference per year. Comparing $800 plasma's to $4000 LCD's (LED LCD) is the only way you can get that electricity bill difference. And yet the only thing the 8500 has over the V10 is an equivalent in blacks. For $2000 more and you still get less of a PQ, awful viewing angles and input lag. No burn in with top end plasma's, only image retention on the Samsung B650.

Doesn't matter. I will never own a plasma for the reasons that I've already stated. For me, the nature of the technology is a problem.

Dude, you really exaggerate the heat a plasma gives off. My PC creates more heat than that thing and my Plasma actually has the energy star logo on it. So I highly doubt it takes up that much more electricity than an LCD, but the better Colors, Contrast, Black levels, Input lag, Response timings make them much better than LCD. Also, the burn in is pretty much a non issue. I went on a guitar hero craze a few months back and had image retention of the meters, so I watched a few movies, played a different game and it was gone. That spree was hours at a time throughout the day for a week, and I have never had any problems with other games. Also unless you live in an attic or a very very tiny room, my Plasma, PS3, 360 and PC don't heat up my room to the point of the need of AC, but during the summer the outside heat is a much bigger factor for that. Just saying Plasma beats LCD any day.

Technically yes, but Panasonic is usually awarded best Plasma due to them being much more affordable with almost the same picture quality. The Pioneer's just beat them by a smidge. But Pioneers are no longer being made, so Panasonic is the King of Plasma's.
