I have still yet to play WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2011, Rock Band 3 and Call of Duty: Black Ops this Christmas (and my brothers getting Mass Effect 2, Mafia II, Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. So it could change at Christmas but so far I would say Red Dead Redemption and that is what I voted for on GameSpot's official readers' poll :).
It is all about opinions and mine is that i have had most fun and lost lots of sleepless hours, workless days and social-less nights playing Fallout New Vegas. For me, this is my GOTY followed closely by Red Dead Redemption.

I 100% agree with EvilSelf Fallout is a Class A Game very unique and addictive loads of outcomes and results
I think its RDR and I don't think anything else comes close.
Lots of people will say Mass Effect 2 and it was a very good game, but RDR was so unique and engrossing it is hard to argue with it. Plus the Undead Nightmare DLC is like a whole new game. IDK to me it was clear as soon as I started playing RDR.
I think mentioning Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is important. It would be VERY hard for me to give my GOTY to a FPS, but BFBC2 is worthy of it. If it wasn't released in a year with so many good games I think it would be up there. Despite being an Xbox Live game Super Meat Boy should also get a mention. I sunk more hours into that game than any other.
Everyone is predicting Mass Effect 3 will win next year and it very well could, but for next year I would bet on Dead Space 2 or maybe even L.A. Noire. Dead Space was my GOTY when it came out.
The game I got into the most was Red Dead, but the game I had the most fun on was Dead Rising 2. I know its not the best game, but the coop was just fun.
My three favorites this year were Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Bayonetta, and Mass Effect 2. I think I'd have to pick ME2 as my GOTY. It had great combat, awesome characters, amazing dialogue and a pretty good story (I liked the story in the first one better, but still not bad). Plus, I've played 100+ hours over 4 playthroughs.

I'm not arguing that Red Dead isn't a GOTY contender, but how was it so unique? It's GTA in the wild west.
Red Dead. The story was unique and engrossing, and there was tons of content that was actually fun. Mass Effect 2 is a runner-up, but compared to other games Bioware has created, ME2 was really just average.
There are others I have yet to play, so I can't say for sure. So far it's Alan Wake. I loved everything about it. Red Dead Redemption and Mass Effect 2 were great, I just thought that Alan Wake was the most original game I've played in a while.

Operative words Wild West. It is a western game. Their have been VERY few western/frontier games and NONE of them have been good except RDR. Sure it is a lot like GTA, but I consider that a good thing. Also the online modes are the most unique I've played lately besides AC:Brotherhood. The posse aspect and being able to play poker and liar's dice as part of multiplayer free roam is a new idea. My guess is most people never played RDR's multiplayer and that is a shame b/c it is really fun.
