what has been some of the best singleplayer stories and games you have played?

Having just had a child at the time and getting a new slim PS3 I became hooked on those long nights to Heavy Rain. I found it quite compelling and a game that I had to see through to the end, it was brilliant.
Another game I used to love was Liberation on my old Amiga CD32. It had a great story of conspiracy and was way ahead of it's time, at the time. Why the game hardly gets a mention nowdays but Half life gets splashed just about everywhere is far beyond me..
Silent Hill 1 was also another game I loved dearly when it came out. I always remember getting the car crash ending where you never got out of the car in the first place and thinking "how fitting!". I do like an unhappy ending sometimes and that one fit the strangness of the story that came before it..
Fallout 1 to New Vegas. I would rate these games very highly on the great single player scale. Nuclear war, desolation, guns and Fallout boy. what more could you really want from a great game with a "not so unbelievable" backstory.
Stalker. chernobyl. Anything based on a catastrophe that has a 30 kilometre exclusion zone is sure to intice a thought of the possibilites of what could, and can be from such a disaster. with so much radiation twisting atoms and DNA to unknown proportions your bound to get some freaky new life forms or other possibilties that are quite unknown on such a scale. As horrible as the situation was/is for the people that had to endure it I think people will always be facinated by it. It's just so bloody eerie an all..
Well theres a few that I liked.
Ok, here are the best stories i have encountered in games i have played (in no particular order):
Red Dead Redemption, LA NOIRE, Mass Effect series, Deadly Premonition, Dead Space series, Bioshock series, The Witcher 2, The Orange Box (Half Life 2 and Portal)
Here are the best single player experiences:
Fallout New Vegas, Fallout 3, Skyrim, Oblivion, Two Worlds 2 plus all of the above!
Enjoy!
red dead redemption, mafia 2, saints row, saints row 2, fable, and tes oblivion. all great games very fun with good story.
The entire Halo Series is amazing in terms of its single player experience. Hoping Halo 4 lives up to this.
The first FEAR game was also really good; 2 and 3 were okay...
I still consider Red Dead Redemption to be the best singleplayer experience this generation.
The best of all time? Metroid Prime.

Zelda series always seem to impress me over and over again, so it's my favorite. Other than that, Bioshock, Arkham games, Heavy Rain, Alan Wake,Mass Effect series (still have yet to try the 3rd), Resident Evil 4, Shadow of the Colossus, Mario 3D games, Metal Gear Solid series, Portal 2,Fire Emblem series (except the DS one), basically all games Rare has made in the 64 era, Pokemon games before Pearl/Diamond, Eternal Darkness and Metroid Prime Trilogy.
I may have missed some. I still have many I want to play which I have a feeling they could be on the list: Dragon Age, Red Dead Redemption, Half Life, Viewtiful Joe, Xenoblade, Assassin's Creed 2, and LA Noire.
There's too many games 7 years in to say just 1. There's tons of awesome single player games from Wet to Skyrim to Batman to Rayman to Resident Evil to Gears to Halo to Shadow Complex to Bioshock to so many more experiences.
Fallout 3/New Vegas is the best singleplayer game available.
Bioshock is also good, but none of those have great stories. Witcher 2 is a great sp game with a good story.
Mass Effect 2 and 3 had me hooked (have yet to play 1, but will as soon as I get my 360). I don't care what anyone else says, I liked the ending of ME3, sure it wasn't as open-ended as people may want, but I thought it was very fitting for a space opera.
As for RDR, I don't see where the story was that great, but that's just me. Bioshock had me hooked as well.
Sleeping Dogs, while I never finished it due to my PS3 being about to die, I did play through about 75% of it and I was really into it and the story felt very tight.
