NOTE: By "best" I mean most fun, not necessarily most popular. Third person shooters are without a doubt my favorite genre in gaming. I love them to death. Lately, though, I've found myself looking for a new one, but I really an't settle on one. Some of my favorites include Lost Planet 2, Dark Void, Army of Two(and the 40th Day), Mercs 2, Just Cause 2, and lately EDF: Insect Armageddon. Suggestions, anyone? Co op is preferred, though not strictly necessary.

Quite surprised you haven't played (well, you may have, but you didn't list it) the Gears of War series :P. I know it's a bit of a mainstream choice to pick, but really, that was my first thought coming in to this thread... and probably the best. Gears of War was one of the first games I played on my 360, and it actually turned in to one of my favourite series of all time, up there with Metal Gear Solid, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil and GTA to name a few of them. It has great co-op as well! The first games campaign is probably still my favourite, whereas Gears 2's is probably the longest. It also has some nice multiplayer maps. Gears 3 has the best horde mode, weapons and a new beast mode. I really love this series, it's awesome! But if you actually have played this series (if you haven't I REALLY recommend it), then you could also check out Resident Evil 5. While not the best entry in the Resident Evil series (if you have never played Resident Evil, I would start with the old ones, but that is another story as you want a third person shooter), it is still a fun game. Actually, if you are willing to just forget all the past games and just play the more recent ones, then don't hesitate but to check out Resident Evil 4 and 5. While RE4 isn't CONSTANT action (whereas RE5 pretty much is), it is better in my opinion. Also, if you do choose to go with the RE games, remember not to go in with the thought that THIS is how Resident Evil games are, because that will probably put you off the rest of the RE games for life, from experience of reading stuff on here before :P.

Gears was kind of a mixed bag for me. I loed the first game to pieces. The second one was okay, but for too many moving setpieces, right up until you found Dom's wife(I've always had a thing for sidekicks, so Dom was my character through both games, so I was really crushed by that particular revelation. I've tried playing Gears 3 a couple of times, but I just couldn't ever get into it. So far as Resident Evil goes, I did play 5 when it first came out(playing as Shiva(?) got me hooked on the left hand viewpoint),and it was cool, but the very distinct lack of zombies left a bad taste in my mouth. I played RE: Director's Cut and RE2 way back in the day, but none since, so I had no idea what the hell the bug people were all about. I played most of the higher profile 3PSs up until about end-2010, but the games that have consistenly ranked as some of my favorites have been games like WET, Wanted: Weapons of Fate, Dark Void and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine. I've been considering Bionic Commando. I Figure at 5 bucks used, I can't really go wrong. Thoughts?

After playing the demo, I think I'll be picking up Sleeping Dogs, but great news just dawned on my game radar- Army of TWO: The Devil's Cartel is on the horizon!March 2013 is going to bring together my favorite co op shooter franchise and the faceless antagonist I've been itching to kill- the Mexican drug cartels.

Vanquish was okay, but the melee system made it unplayable for me. Binary Domain was interesting, but I only played the demo once and I didn't form a solid opinion as to whether or not to buy it(which led to me not buying it). Why do you recommend it?(wait- Binary Domain was a FPS where you hacked the bosses, right? If not, what am I thinking of...?)

Like some others have said you can't go wrong with any of the Gears games, RE5, Vanquish or Splinter Cell Conviction. Also Saints Row The Third and Red Faction Armageddon are great fun.

I haven't played Mass Effect but Mass Effect 2 & 3 are pretty good. The Saboteur, Alan Wake, Red Dead Redemption, Dead Space 1 &2 are all quality. Mercenaries 2, Crackdown, 50 Cent BotS, The Club and The Bourne Conspiracy are not bad either.

Not all strictly shooters but enough to keep you happy.;)

Everyone's suggested what I can think of really, but there remains but one...

Bear with me while I fasten on my flame-proof suit...

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City.

A game that was overlooked due to what it didn't have (a fault that happens in the games industry with critics and gamers alike nowadays).

A game that was overlooked due to it not turning out as what people expected it to be. A flagship RE title.

I'm not saying it's amazing, but it's not bad either.

I agree with pretty much every title mentioned in this thread. 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand is a pretty good game as well, it's a bit like Gears. Saints Row: The Third is fantastic! even if it's not strictly a shooter as mentioned above.
That game was a failure, don't know what they were thinking with that one...chilly-chill
I disagree, it was a great game. While a bit different to the original Splinter Cell games, it was still great. I completed it twice I think, and spent quite a lot of time with the Deniable Ops modes, which I come back to every now and then. Nothing wrong with that game, in my opinion :).

Dark Sector is another great game, although I personally felt that it started to drag a bit towards the end. The levels started to feel a bit long.
Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City.NirdBerd
Hey I agree, Operation Raccoon City was awesome! :P I spent a lot of hours on that and got both campaign DLC's. It would be great if there was a heroes campaign, but I doubt that is going to happen :(. Sure, it may be a bit buggy at times, but it's great fun.

MGS 4 was PS3 only, no? And besides, Metal Gear is more stealth than shooter- stealth games put too much pressure on me to be fun. (And I did play MGS3D on my 3DS, it was just okay in my opinion- not something I would play more than once.)

I did give Gears 3 another whack recently, and frankly it wasn't any more enthralling this time than it was on launch day. Army of Two, on the other hand, was superb- both games. And now that 3 is on the way, color me excited.

I'll likely play Read Dead again in another year or two- open world epics are too tiring to be played yearly.

Was the game so much different on PS2 than on 3DS? It's not like I had any problem with the controls or the graphics or anything, it was just the level design, story, and the characters just didn't do anything for me. Plus my previously cited aversion to stealth games in general. Don't get me wrong- I'm not calling it a stinker or anything, it just didn't seem to be as great as people claimed gameplaywise.

Binary Domain is definitely not an FPS, so I'm not sure what game you're thinking of. I'd recommend it anyway because it's just a fun bargain-bin shooter. I enjoyed blowing waves of robots to pieces. It's not going to win any GOTY awards but it's a fun, overlooked shooter.

I just bought Bionic Commando. Despite what the reviewers claim, it is a fine game. It would have made it to "great" if cheap death wasn't quite so abundant. Seriously- if you go off course into a radiation patch(which can be distressingly easy to do sometimes) or misjudge a swing and fall into water, you die in less than three seconds. Which can be especially annoying when you swing too high, as the radiation will likely kill you before gravity can save you. But beside that, once you pin down the swinging(which took me between an hour and 90 minutes) and unlock some of the more interesting combat moves, the game really comes into it's own. The enemy AI isn't anything to scoff at, either- they group up by twos and threes, but rarely bunch up close enough to complete some of the more advanced explosive challenges. And one more thing: Just Cause 3 would do well to take some pointers from Spencer's Arm. Could someone tell me more about Dark Sector? What are the highs and lows gameplaywise? I remember seeing my brother playing it years ago, and I have an affinity for older, less popular games.

Highs

A solid cover shooter.

The Glaive is alot of fun to use especially after you get power throw and after touch.

You can also use the glaive on various elements such as fire or electricity and it will take on those properties.

It's challenging, but fair.

It's 3 dollars

Lows

The story is complete nonsense. Seriously, I didn't even know what was going on half the time, much less care.

The Glaive is so overpowered that you hardly use secondary weapons.

Weapon selection is limited, and to have permanent secondary weapons (basically anything besides your pistol and glaive) you have to buy them on the black market which are pricey. All weapons found on the ground self destruct after 30 seconds of use.

I just picked up Spec Ops: The Line(been catching up on my 360 library after spending the last year buying almost exclusively for my 3DS). The campaign for this game is simply amazing. The setting, the character progression, the moral choices- everything has simply come together in this game to tell an amazing story. I went in believing I would come out an honorable soldier, head held high, but the positions I've been forced into, and the choices I've made have made that outcome all but impossible. This game has made even fictional war seem less like a good guy vs bad guy action flick than like an all around headf***. Outstanding.
