As a drummer and musician in "real life" without an active band, not to mention I live in a quiet apartment complex, I'm looking for a way to sate my desire to rock out on a drum set. Enter the newest generation of rhythm games! The only problem I'm having is deciding which fake-band-plastic-instrument game to drop nearly $200 (!) on. I've read many arguments for both, but I'm looking for answers on the drum kit itself and which game is more 'realistic' and fun for drummers particularly (better kit, note charts, durability, drummer-geared songs, etc.) I'm also very interested in getting online and rocking out with other faux-rockstars. Bonus points to whichever game has better downloadable song content.

p.s. if you vote 'other', please indicate which 'other' game you're referring to! :)

Been an active guitarist for a while (in and out of bands) and I can defintiely attest that Rock Band has their charts on every insturment more stable than Activisions feeble attempts. I personally prefer the Rock Band drums when going for the "realisim" aspect and once you acquire the Cymbal Kit attachment things get a little more interesting as well, though on many songs such as Everlong and Mr. Brightside the positions are a bit different than an actual kit (I don't have much experience besides my sisters).

P.S. IMHO the song selection on Rock Band is far better than GH: WT stock and downloadable wise.

Rock Band 2 is the better game with better charts, but I like to use the Guitar Hero drum set with it.

Well, if you're gonna enjoy the drums the most, just buy RB1/2 and then you've got two choices for instruments 1) The ION drumset, 2)RB2 drumset Of course one is cheaper than the other, but if you want a good experience you might want to go out and get it.

Being a drummer for 33 yrs, I personally HATE playing the drum parts on both RB & GH. I'm so use to playing songs and adding my own thing here and there that to have to follow the game and hit it they way they want you too just drives me nuts. I'm not saying that I drown a song in fills constantly, but anyone who plays REAL instruments knows what i'm talking about. I mainly only play the guitar or bass when I play RB & GH. In fact, I'm not even sure where my drum controller is?

I remember when I picked up Guitar Hero for the first time, I knew how to play some of the songs on real guitar, and it was frustrating as hell to do un-instinctive fingering and whatnot. Its not really that I like to add in a whole bunch of my own touches, just that it felt genuinely fake, which ruined a lot of the fun for me, so I kinda know what you're talking about.

So as for the OP, I dont know if this is an option for you or whether you really want a video game drum thing or if you just need to get a drum fix, butyou couldlook into a used electric drum kit if you're stuck in an apartment. Its probably gonna run between $400 or $500 for a decent kit, but it might be something worth looking into.

I am a drummer in real life and I've played both games a lot. I highly suggest Rock Band 2. It is a lot more realistic and a lot more enjoyable to play. If you are willing to spend the extra money on drums, I'd go get the ION drumset instead of the regular one. However, if you don't want to spend the money on the ION set, the regular drum set is fine.

Here's some info on the ION drumset in case you're curious.

Yeah, I know what you're talking about. There are many times playing these types of games where my brain would tell me to strum more or something similar, simply because I know how the song is played on a real instrument. And I actually am somewhat convinced that I will wind up hurting my score occasionally by simply subconsciously throwing in a little extra snare or bass pedal touch now and then. As unrealistic as playing these games is in reference to their real-life counterparts, however, I do still get quite a sensation of fun while playing them, in a Simon-esque kind of way. And it even sometimes makes me view my own technique a little differently and add new techniques, just based on seeing and experiencing how other drummers accentuate the songs, and in what ways it is different from my own feel. It seems as though Rock Band is definitely the way to go, however, from what I have read/heard. Thanks to everyone for their input! :)

Rock Band 2 is a much better game. World Tour was just awful.

Is that because the drumset was malfunctioning out of box and required extensive recalibration before working properly? Lol. :P To be honest, with the elevated cymbals and 5th pad, the Guitar Hero drums are enticing. I've watched a lot of video on youtube, and I think they both look very fun, but the Guitar Hero drums do seem a tad more realistic with dedicated cymbal notes and whatnot.

I started with Rock Band and I loved the drums so much I went out and bought an electronic kit to learn, they were that fun. Then after about a year or so I decided to get the Guitar Hero drums in preparation for GH:Metallica and I find them much more realistic, with the exception of the kick pedal, which I personally find to be terrible. I've even bought the add-on cymbals for RB2 and that does help, but I just find Guitar Hero more challenging...........but...........I like the song selection a lot more in Rock Band. Ugh, you can see why I own everything, there's no happy medium for me.

But if you just had to choose one piece of hardware, I would say Rock Band, because it can be used for both RB/RB2 and it's better for GH:WT than GH:WT is for RB. I hope that't not overly confusing. :P

Guitar Hero has symbols. I haven't played Rock Band a lot so I forget if there are symbols on that drum set.
