The Muse Key is to the lock that was next to the tonic he gives you after you complete his master piece. Its just money and ammo, so its not really worth it to backtrack.
Really it is only worth it in hard mode when ammo gets so hard to find. But also the whole achievement thing when you kill him in the apartment is worth it too.
