i think you're forgetting it's a game. Although i do have to say that the starting of the game is lame. The plane just happens to crash next to the entrance to the Rapture. Then we're listening to a random person on a radio and following his orders.
In the end, since it's a sci-fi game, i'm willing to look past the obviousness of the story and enjoy the gameplay part of it.

Dude, you can't judge the start of the game by a demo, I think that in the full game, the intro would be a little more drawn out, and I'm just guessing that as you play the game, you'll find out why the plane crashed where it did. Sort of like a "Lost" type scenario.

This is true, but people who have the game already said the beginning starts the same except without the tommy-gun and plasma. And with the gameplay 'supposably' clocking in around 20 hours, i highly doubt it's a "Lost' type of storyline. I'm looking forward to finding out next week either way :)
I dont get your death penalty ideas at all.
You want a save system, but you want penalties if you die? Sounds like you are contradicting yourself. If you saved before you died, why wouldnt you just load the save up instead of taking the penalty.
Plus ITS A GAME, its supposed to be entertaining, not mind numbing. Personally I wouldnt play a game like you suggested because it wouldnt be FUN!I understand you think its suposed to be scarey, but penalizing me if I die isnt scarey just annoying.
Scarey is done with atmosphere, done with surprise, done with suspense. Not with some gimmick to try and make me afraid to die in a video game.

It'd be way more fun! They could call it, "Mid-Ocean Swimming Adventure". You would just swim around until you either ran out of stamina, died of dehydration or were killed by sharks you were powerless to defend yourself from. The replayability alone would make it GOTY.
Thats exactly WHY THERS A GAME DAHthats why he said he was special THINK IF HE didnt land there thered be no game geezi think you're forgetting it's a game. Irrational's Bioshock and System Shock II were never meant to be survival horror games or pshychological thrillers oranything like Silent Hill... so this amounts to saying "Hey I don't Like Grand Theft Auto because it doesn't capture the same feel Max Payne does."
What System Shock II and Bioshock do is immerse the player into a brilliant sci fi world while telling an engaging story about expierments gone wrong... Some games like Bioshock and Halo aren't meant to be games where you die... you lose and start over again... you are meant to go through the story and get what you want out of the game.
So really nothing is wrong with the game... it's your perception of what the game should be that is wrong.

I hope you are kidding, that would make the game hit more trashbins than anything else in history... Talk about boring and absurd.
Any sci-fi story is going to have something unbelievable or extreme coincidence take place, you have to get started somewhere. So making it crash near Rapture sets the ball rolling.
Furthermore, how do you know the crash was an accident?

It would be more of a simulator than anything. Like Tom Clancy games without the fun! Realism FTW!!!

Very good point. Agreed. :D
...So basically you're judging 20-30 hours of plot based on a 30 minute demo? Doesn't that seem a little...dumb?
THIS IS EXACTLY why Bioshoick feels like a tech demo and carries nearly no emotion in that sense. Save the guys family like he says in the demo. Big deal, just keep retrying until you get it right... If you had one chance then that would say something.A7Xfan
Also, do you even PLAY videogames at all? "Keep retrying til you get it right" is whatgaming has always been about.

He said the horror was in the vein of The Shining and he only hoped it could be half as scary (that coming from one of the lead designers in gamespot's Q & AIrrational's Bioshock and System Shock II were never meant to be survival horror games or pshychological thrillers oranything like Silent Hill... so this amounts to saying "Hey I don't Like Grand Theft Auto because it doesn't capture the same feel Max Payne does."

it feels like a very well thought out , extremely well executed game. it's an INSTANT classic.furtherfanIt is well balanced and has some cool mechanics but at the end of the demo when Andrew Ryan said those people were coming to kill me or wateve I wasn't scared at all, I was actaully bored and waiting for the demo to end. This being after the scenario where there's a bunch of people around and a turret in the bathroom, after a few seconds i just realized I could run around and die freely and just take a couple out at a time.

Sounds like your the one forgetting it's just a game. Of course you are going to crash near the entrance, it would be kinda boring if you had to swim for longer than that. And the guy you are listening to is Atlas, he helps provide background, support, and guides you through the game.
I think you're being overtly critical about stuff that is necessary for game and plot development.

I played through the demo of it and it was very cool, so far as the graphics and sound go and the interactivity with many things within the environment. It just feels like another scary game though and to be honest I wans't scared at all, just grossed out. Silent Hill games scare me a good amount, but there's a big problem in these games that totally ruins the suspense. There's seemingly no punishment for death.
You want to make a "survival/horror game" or in this case a pyschological thriller, you've gotta give some weight to the players life. nothing was terrifying because none of it meant the end of the game, instead it was just a quick and painless revival.
I don't get why they don't just let you save anywhere in the game but it's only meant for when you quit and are done playing, so it would take quite a while to load back up the world. (say 3 or 4 minutes) BUT once you died there was massive consequences. Like having either 4 revive points in the game or none even. Imagine things popping out at you at the end of the game, you're fighting for your virtual life for completion and there's a lot of meaning to it and similarly the player would actually see the game through completion as the in game character in every game does. I mean if they want make the game seperate in "stories" where you control a different adventure within that character's life or control some other character.

ya this life system did make games more interesting... when they were 20 minutes long!! im not gonna go thru 19 hours of gameplay in a 20 hour game and die and go back to the beginning... in fact id probly take the disc out and find the nearest chainsaw...
I feel its more then a tech demo but its not out to be a horror/survival game. Your making into somethings its not and you will be disappointed just off of the conception of wanting it to be something. I do agree that i want system for death that makes me stuggle, die, and start back far enough to make me approach things differently.
