I talked to my friend a little bit and he said it's not very scary. He said it may startle you at parts but that's about it.

If you hear some Irish guy singing "Jesus loves me and I know..." it's officially time to crap your pants and start running. Or find a wrench...

I don't think that the game is scary, just creepy. Some parts(like when you see the little sister for the first time) just send shivers down my spine. Other parts just make me jump a bit.

The only scary bits were when you came across a corpse that suddenly comes to life with a scream and jumps at you.

Remember that bit in Hephaestus where you go into that long room, the lights go out twice with sounds of laughter, and when you go back to the start of the room(as the door up ahead was locked) the corpses scream and leap at you. That bit got me good.

Now, I know the devs probably weren't looking to make it a frightening game, but if the Big Daddies attacked you on sight rather than ignoring you till you hurt them or got too close to a Little Sister, it would be a hell of a lot scarier. Just picture walking down a flooded hallway, then all of a sudden you hear the heavy stomping, and the long drawn out groans of a Big Daddy. Then, you round the corner only to see the green lights on his helmet turn red and him charging after you like a madman.

As it is, though, it's not very scary. It's kind of creepy, and some parts have me glancing over my shoulder to make sure there isn't a splicer behind me, but overall it doesn't have me on edge like Doom 3 did.

There was one part where you go down into a flooded room and there's a corpse sitting in a chair and facing the wall. Then, you go over to use the vending machine and when you turn around, the "corpse" is doing aballet pose right infront of youbefore screaming and swinging her weapon at you. That made me jump a little.

Oh, it's downright creepy.  I wouldn't want to go run around outside in the dark after playing it.  Heck, I don't even like walking through my own house in the pitch dark after playing it.  It can be a bit of a mind--well, you know.
The worst though for me was Silent Hill, for some reason...  Driving home in the fog and there was this huge lump in the road that looked like a body with all the mist swirling around it... I floored it for sure, but it was just a bunch of boxes and trash when I drove by.
I think it depends on how overactive your imagination is--the level that games like these will creep you out on, I mean.  I fall into the creeped out category.

Yeah it's a bit creepy ... I was never a big fan of the whole whispering or maoning sound effects of a bad guy you can't see yet ... but he's close oh so close.... Oh and don't wear headphones and play this in the dark .... just plain creepy then!!

It can be a little scary at certain points. Definitely not the scariest game I've ever played though.

That part didn't really scare me much, but I did get to the point where I didn't like going past a "corpse" because they started jumping up at you somewhat often after that. Moreso from the annoyance of having to kill yet more slicers, and these ones seemingly dead before you walk past them. There was a small "wtf" moment there when the lights go off and then come back on and the corpse I was about to loot was missing. :P

If I hadn't seen that part before coming across the one that pops up behind the casket in the morgue in the medical pavilion, that probably would have made me jump.

What's scary is how much time I've already spent playing this game.

P.S. tell my wife and kids I love them.

After that part, I show every corpse I came across.

This game is not scary at all. But it does have a fantastic setting and atmosphere.

Oh yeah, and after the third corpse jumped up at me, I started torching all corpses I came across.

really the only time i jumped was when the first splicer jumped out at me (like 10 minutes in) and the first time i saw a big daddy fly across the screen with surprising speed to destroy me

When you get the shotgun and the lights turn off and them that single light in the middle turns on. I just back up into te corner next to the vita chamber and used incinerate on any one running.

Condemned is scarier. When you play Condemned when the crazy enemies come at you you don't have a nice electric shooting shotgun at your disposal to make you feel safer.

Your right. I only played the first level at a friends house and I gave him the controller at moments cause I couldn't bear to look.
