I completely fail to see just how one could go about comparing both BioShock and Mass Effect to one another. It just doesn't seem plausible. BioShock is a fresh and original story set in a time and place that not many games (or films, or books) have ventured, while Mass Effect just seems like Freelancer minus the flight simulation. Now, that's not to say Mass Effect won't have great gameplay, but when you're considering a Game of the Year, it is important to count all of the factors as to what makes a game great, or even worthy of GOTY nomination.
So far, BioShock has shown these qualities, and while Mass Effect does look good, it just doesn't seem to bring the "Epic" feeling that one would expect for such an ambitious project--and make no mistake, it is ambitious.
I guess I'd have to give my nod to BioShock over Mass Effect, having actually played the demo and being immediately enveloped in the atmosphere and tension that it managed to bring. While it might be more reminiscent of the FEAR demo for the 360 (hacked and slashed bits of different levels for one "demo level"), I have to say that so far it's managed to hold my attention a lot longer than MAss Effect has. Point blank, it's just different, while Mass Effect seems to resemble many games, movies, or books that we've all seen before... and I guess, right now, I'd award originality over whether or not I kill space aliens.
Now I know, there is a ton of crap that BioWare has put into their Mass Effect IP, but once you strip away the fancy bits like conversation choices and world-hopping, you still get a pretty standard action/adventure affair. BioShock doesn't seem to be pretending at all that it's just a First Person Shooter, but it also presents the FPS in an atmospheric way, as well as bringing us an intriguing story. I didn't feel like I had played all there was to play in the BioShock demo, and so I have to say I'm much more excited for it. Whether or not it will be the better game, well, we'll have to wait until Mass Effect drops this November to find out.
Personally, I'm leaning more towards BioShock.
to make moronic statements about a game that not only has immaculate reviews, but a game that has officially gone golden is just dumb on your part.Digital_DJ_00Before you start talking about dumb, maybe you should read what I wrote. I specifically said that Bioshock is going to be fantastic. I never said anything otherwise about it's quallity. Saying it is linear is not saying it sucks in any way.

Yah, the game is not linear per say but its not open-ended but not completely linear if ya play the demo even you notice you have a place you have to get to but on the way there is different rooms and areas to explore. Both games are gonna be excellent personally im getting both i mean they both look amazing.
Ya i was pumped for Mass Effect and i still am, the purchase of the xbox instead of a ps3 was because of that game coming out.
But oh my god bioshock is looking good. Never before have i seen something so original and fantastic. I thought before its gonna look nice and have a good story but it will be clunky and the gameplay will drag it down. but the demo did that away it plays great. Now with perfect 10's hitting everywhere and how basically everyone has the same reaction to it being OH MY F'ING GOD! (im talking about reviewers not forum fanboys), im seeing this as being GOTY material. Mass effect definitely has a chance though but my money is on Bioshock cause of its sheer originality which has been lost in almost all forms of media these days.
But honestly both games will be fantastic and us as gamers should be happy that games like these are maturing to this stage where they truly rival some great books and film for story and shatter everything that we have been accustomed to in gaming. Buy both games and support both of these great companies so we can see more in the future.
I voted for Mass Effect, but it was a very close call. Bioshock has a lot of positives going for it.
For one, it has been said that Bioshock is not linear. The first two levels of the game (including the demo) are more linear because it also serves as a tutorial, but after that point the player is free to explore the city at will. However, Mass Effect may have an edge in this area. BS takes place in an underwater city, but ME takes place throughout the galaxy, giving the player dozens of worlds to explore. It remains to be seen how linear these individual worlds will be - don't expect Oblivion levels of roaming ability, but defined paths to follow on each world, much like KOTOR.
BS has the edge in the fiction of the world. It takes place in a totally unique environment and tells a unique story. ME rests in the comfortable place of sci-fi, with its desert planets and ice planets and lava planets, etc etc. I think BS will tell a more consistent story from beginning to end.
I think both games will be incredible. We all know more about BS because we've played the demo, so it's really not fair to compare the two. And besides, why should we choose? BS will be out in a week, ME in 2 months. I only play a few hours a week, but I'm fairly certain I'll make my way through the game before ME comes out. I refuse to choose - give me both!
this is a bogus question considering that no one has played both games. The most anyone has done is read the previews and played the Bioshock demo. The demo was impressive but you can not judge the whole game on that. Ask this question in Dec when we have played both games.
Mass Effect, I haven't seen one thing about the game I didn't like.

Mass Effect hands down
