I downloaded Blue dragon demo last night and just played it...and I'm really not impressed. I love rpg's ever sinse Dragon Warrior 1, Final Fantasy 1, Phantasy Star, Shining Force, every major series on almost every console sinse the 8-bit nes. I even have video game tattoos. My favorite rpg of all time is still Chrono Trigger, and the fact that Blue Dragon is being designed by the team responsible for chrono Trigger, I was excited.

But after playing Blue Dragon myself I'm left wondering..."That's it?" The characters, the god-aweful voice acting, the menu interface, the long drawn out battles, the fact that you choose the attack command and instead of the character attacking, you wait quite a while while the character powers up and then instead of attacking, a shadow ghoul attacks instead.

Oh, that and the text was as bad as that in Dead Rising. If you don't have an HDTV, then this game will be a chore to read if you plan on reading commands and menus. Which just like Dead Rising, I wonder why the 360 has a switch on the power bar giving the option of TV or HDTV when clearly everyone is expected to have an HDTV.

Bloody hell, where the graphics are concerned, the graphics in Dragon Quest 8 on the PS2 impressed me more than the graphics I saw in Blue Dragon. Obviously I was expecting something more from a state of the art game on such an expensive consol.

The game seems pretty good, although the demo was kind of lame. Eternal Sonata comes out in September, it had an awesome demo.

I dont think the demo was very indicative of the final game, the game sold near 500, 000 copies in Japan. This is an xbox 360 game, think about that.

Edit: nearly 200, 000, still impressive for an xbox 360 title

So what you're saying is that the voice acting in the real game won't suck and the characters in the real game won't be disappointing and the battle sequences won't be as boring as watching paint dry? Is that what you're telling me with the "that's pretty smart" comment?

I remember playing the demo for Dragon Quest 8, and when I played the real game when it was released it was even better than the already impressive demo. Do you have some sort of inside knowledge why they would deliberately put out a demo for Blue Dragon that bores the masses, while secretly planning on releasing a game that doesn't suck?

I guess if that's the case then the jokes on me. I've been fooled by their crappy demo. At the same time the jokes on them because me and anyone else like me who's disapointed with the crappy demo won't buy the real game which makes game sales lower and no game company wants to deliberately lower their own game sales. But I guess that kind of thinking is smarter right?

IMO, the demo for Blue Dragon felt like your standard JRPG. I really dislike the art s-tyle, but I think the graphics are top notch. I absolutely could not stand the voice acting for Shu, the main character, and Marumaro, that little creature, but the other charaters voices were pretty decent. The game seems extremely easy cause I jumped right into it instead of reading how to play since you only have an hour for the demo, and I was able to beat the main bad guy for that part of the demo. I forgot his name, but you fought his 4 henchmen first, and then him. IMO, the battle system really shows its age. I picture some people liking the old timey battle system, and some people wishing there was something more.

In the end, Blue Dragon is the same old same old JRPG. I believe it will be a good game for JRPG lovers, but it won't convert anyone into liking them.

IMO, I think it will score 8.0, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if it dipped below AA, to say 7.5.

And chefstubbies, I really can't understand how you can call Dragon Quest's combat impressive, then go to say Blue Dragon's is boring? Dragon Quest is probably more monotonus than Dynasty Warriors...

Dynasty Warriors... ouch. The combat in the Blue Dragon demo sucked because every single ability was unlocked. It took any sense of strategy right out of the game.

I didn't say the combat specifically was impressive, I said the demo itself was impressive. I brought up Dragon Quest 8 because the demo played exactly as the real game did. DQ8's demo wasn't poorly thrown together expecting you to play and keep in mind that "the real game won't suck this bad, trust us!"

What I'm unimpressed with from what I saw in Blue Dragon (where combat is concerned sinse you pointed it out) is how bloody long each and every battle took. Every command I made took way way way too long to execute, because the characters were taking their sweet time standing there all dragon ball z style powering up or whatever so a shadow ghoul could battle for them. If there's one thing I always hear about from people that don't like turn based rpg's is that the battles take too long. So why'd the developers of Blue Dragon take a system that already takes long enough, and implement a way to make it take even longer?

You do realize that you could forgoe charging the attack so they would do the move selected instantly right? When they tell you to charge your attack by holding the A button you can just give it a quick tap and they will attack/cast a lot quicker than with charging(They will do less damage though obviously). In regards to the shadows, did you even read up on this game like, at all, before playing the demo? This was one of the first things announced about the game because it was integral to the story. I don't understand how this is a bad thing especially when everyone expecting the game(that actually had read up on it) realized it was classic JRPG with turn based combat.

i think you didn't play the demo right.

i like chrono trigger and i like this game. you said you dislike- voices: you can set them in japanese, you saying battle takes too long, well my friend don't hold the button so they won't charge.. just press it right away and they will do their move as soon as you press it.

the characters where at lv25 and they had so much spells, i magine how much more they will gain and how much more ability you can gain. the drawing for me looks great since dbz is my favorite anime, graphics looks great, sound is great. overall will be a great rpg.

they have that skill that if you defeat a too weak monster you can use it and won't have to fight it again.. battles won't take long with that.

the only negative thing i have to say is to fix the lag when i charge everyones attack and thats all, the rest is very sweet. i only played the top mission and i loved it, didn't want to play the 2nd because of spoilers.

"Did I read up on this game like at all before playing the demo?"

Well, did you bother to take the time to read any of my other posts in this topic? Since your being such a sarcastic smarta**, I'll repeat myself. I've enjoyed rpg's since Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy, Phantasy Star, Shining Force, my favorite rpg is Chrono Trigger, and from what I played of Blue Dragon, it won't be half the epic game that Chrono Trigger is. And that disappoints me.

What a couple of jerky comments. Sleepless nights of endless research aren't necessary to identify a turn based rpg. Like I said, yeah I did read up on the game. But reading up on an upcoming game has little influence on whether I enjoy a game or not.

Yeah, just a really standard turnbased JRPG. I think it will be a 7 or so. The only reason an RPG fan might not like this is simply because there really is nothing new here. Yeah the charge system is sort of new, but it's really a tweak to an already refined system.

As far as the demo, I really like the music in the first dugeon, but I'm not a fan of JRPGs. This doesn't really appeal to me. The voice acting wasn't so great, but it doesn't really matter to me that much.

On the contrary, I did not like the demo that much at all due to the fact it concerntrated soley on the fighting i mean if i was brought into a final fantasy game with 2 areas where i can only fight with nearly all the abilities unlocked i would get bored aswell.. The game comes on 3 DVD's and I have seen the japenese version which is a billion times better than the demo.. bad choice for an RPG demo, especially the demo taking place so far into the game.. Some games this might work for but not this one... P.S 200,000 game sales in japan a country were nintendo and sony rules... those are amazing figures!!!

Well i thought that the Eternal Sonata demo was 10x better, as it remebered me of my favorite Gamecube game (Tales of Symphonia), but I'll still get Blue Dragon eventually. Not really because I want to buy it, but since Gamefly isn't renting it out, I really don't have a choice but to buy it. Still, it will probably wait until January or so after the avalanche of great games coming from August-December.

With all of the great games coming out this fall, I will take a pass on this game. Bad demo, And nothing is going to change the horrible things we have all seen in the demo. Unless the changed the entire game at the last moment this will be a very average game. 6.5 MAX. I will focus my attention on Two Wolds, thank you very much.

If they were smart they would take the demo off, it can only hurt sales.

Theres already reviews up, its more in the 8.9 range. The demo kinda sucked, but you could tell why it sucked. Plus the game was already released and well-reviewed in other regions, although the demo is half-assed for some reason. http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/bluedragon?q=blue%20dragon

Your probably right. I just don't want to play an RPG with cute kiddy characters. And the whole blue dragon shadow thing doesn't work for me.

The game is on 3 dvds so there will be a lot of content. I'm torn here.

I will definetly wait a couple of months because of that demo though.

I don't get all the Blue Dragon hate, especially from people who claim to like old school rpgs. Blue Dragon is as old school as it gets. I guess getting all of the abilities to play around with overwhelmed everyone and their brains broke trying to figure it out.

The demo was fine, and the text is readable on a 27" sdtv(or it is on mine anyways). The only problems I had were the framerate and menus were a little sluggish, and the corporeal attacks were seriously overpowered.
