I just got a 1080p HDTV and currently have a first generation xbox 360 that does not have HDMI port. Would it be worth it to buy an xbox with HDMI port for i think 350 is what they are now, or just stick with what I have now. I figure I could probably sell my original 360 on ebay with 1 or 2 of my games for about 250. So is it worth 100 dollars to upgrade, or should i wait until 360's drop in price

no game on 360 runs in 1080p natives so it does not really matter. keep your old 360 .

Component cables can reach 1080p anyways... it has been an option to select 1080p since the 360 was released and the HDMI model was just released in 2007... they haven't simply lied about 1080p capabilities for 2 years...

you would probably not notice the difference between component cables and hdmi, so keep your current 360 as long as it works. another thing is HDMI is just 1 plug, so usually you cannot hook up your surround sound (unless it has hdmi hookups).

oh and to "upgrade" to a new 360, it would probably cost you considerably more than $100. I would not think thatanyone will pay $250 for a used 360 that is over a few months old.

vga and component will both do 1080p for you... and you would have a hard time telling a difference between those connections and hdmi... also, i think the $80 hdmi adapter has been released now, so that's an option as well.

Yeah I tried to upgrade and Gamestop would give ne $150 in store credit... that means $200 for a new 360 with HDMI or $300 for an Elite...

If you use an adapter it will make no difference and you may in fact loose quality... HDMI and DVI are digital signal cables... Component and VGA are analogue... turning analogue into digital would most certainly loose quality...

Some of you are half right - component cables CAN do 1080p, but on the Xbox 360, it is NOT ALLOWED. The same goes for most HD DVD players and even most televisions won't accept 1080p through component. I believe the reason for this stems from copyright protection laws, but I'm not exactly sure.

In any case, you CANNOT get 1080p picture with your component cables using your old Xbox. Sorry, but you can't. Personally, I can barely tell the difference between 1080p and 1080i, so spending $100-$200 bucks for that sole reason doesn't sound appealing to me. If you're a video enthusiast, though, and MUST HAVE the best possible picture, then go for it. Keep in mind, however, that only a select few games really have true 1080p picture (Bioshock, COD 4) and most will only do 1080i anyway. I say, if your TV is a high quality HDTV, 1080i will still look stunning, so no need to spend all that money for just a little bit of polish.

Oh yeah, if you're THAT hard up for cheap 1080p picture you CAN get 1080p with your old Xbox using a VGA cable, or a VGA to HDMI converter. However, be wary - VGA is known to shift color hues so it's possible (actually, quite likely) that your color phase will be a bit off. Not a huge deal, but I consider myself a videophile and I'm quite happy with my 1080i.

I would never sell anything back to gamestop. They run the biggest scam ever. I can make at least double on almost everything that gamestop offers me by selling it on ebay. For example I went there to take back GRAW 1, they offered me 9 dollars. I sold it on ebay for 23. Crackdown they offered me 11, ebay i sold it for 25. R6V gamestop offered me 12, ebay sold for 31. Are you getting the hint here. I see xbox 360's selling for 250 right now as we speak (used ones) on ebay. and if i threw in 1 or 2 games i would probably get 300

Yes it makes a difference, I got an elite and the hdmi makes a huge difference in halo 3 for instance. It is sharper now and looks great even in the fast paced action. 1080p helps if you have a larger screen, and hdmi cable is the best way to get digital to digital, plus it sounds great as well. Your best option is to wait until you get the rrod and then when you send in your 360 they will send you back a new one with hdmi!! Chances are sooner or later you will get the red rings.
