You could do two things:
1. Buy Halo 1 and 2 to catch up on the story
2. Read about the story on wikiepida so you know what is going on in Halo 3. Up to you but if you do buy it try to play co-op, it's much better that way.
i've only played the second one which was a rental. never played the first, but even if I ignored the story on Halo 2, the co-op is serious fun.The story in Halo 1 is really good and the single player/co-op is the best part of the game.

once I get a 360 I plan on picking up all three :D. I hope there's a Halo Quad Pack which seems unlikely (Halo + Halo 2 + Halo 2 MP Map Pack + Halo 3)
I hope this doesn't sound as harsh as I think it will:
Play Halo: Combat Evolved,then read about the events of Halo 2. Some parts of the plot sound better on paper than they were in execution.
