I'm not going to take the risk on buying one.

Is there a way to avoid your 360 from breaking?

There is a small risk. If you get a warranty there is no risk (just annoyance) The warranty will pay for any repairs.  What sucks is if it does have something wrong with it you wont be able to pay for it.  There are acouple steps that will "help" keep it in a cool place, keep it away from other electronics, dont move it around when there a disc in it.

paying $40 more dollars for a two year warranty makes it the safest purchase you can make.

Sweet another worthless thread... 360's do not constantly break and are not risks. How many retarded threads have to be made about this? New worse thread ever....vector5252

the failure rate is significantly high... to the point where MS won't even comment about the problem, but will extend the warranty to early adopters.  Peter Moore even avoids the situation in interviews... calling the failure rate a "moving target".

the worry for someone's X360 breaking for no apparent reason is logical.  the thing breaks a lot.  and this is coming from a guy who has had their X360 not break once.

I just got a 360 off ebay with alot of games..with no warranty on it.I'm considering reselling it once I play all the games..for fear of it breaking down. But most people seem to think the constant malfunction is worth it just to be able to play on it when it is working.I'm not too sure if that is a good trade off yet.

If buying the xbox 360 is a risk then buying any other console is a risk because they are all electronic machines and there is always a chance something could happen. So if purchasing videogames for you is a "huge" risk then go play hop-scotch or something.

Get a warranty from a shop...

Microsoft are not right in the head.

My second 360 had 1 month warranty left and i phoned 7 times and all they did is sent me emails which said to wait for another email which never came...

I even sent them an email telling them what was happing and told them that phoning was not working and they sent me an email back saying to phone them... DO THEY NOT UNDERSTAND!

So the fist time my launch 360 broke was in febuary 2006 and it was fixed within a week. just 1 phone call.

But 2nd 360 broke in november 2006 and is the time that i went mad...

So just get a 360 from a shop and get warranty from there.

All electronics have a risk of malfunctioning, so If you are that scared of things breaking, you might as well not buy anything. Just get a warranty with it and all you'll have to do if it breaks is wait a week or two.

I don't quite understand why this thread exists.  Everyone talks about how much the 360 breaks down, but Mircosoft has addressed this problem with an extended warranty of a year.  I got my 360 on launch day and have never had a problem with it and no one I know has had a problem with their 360.  Granted the 360 does run extremely hot, if you place it in a poorly ventilated area chances are, just like any other electronic device, that the 360 will break down.

I take good care of my electronics and was never one who cared too much if something had a warranty on it or how long it is.But the fact remains that XBOX360s dies on you more than electronics or game consoles should. You dont get all these complaints about XBOX1...PS2..Wii or the PS3.  People logging long continuous hours on it because of XBL could factor into it too.

There is also a risk of the ps3, Wii, PC breaking down !!!

All electronic devices have a risk of breaking, so what is the point of this thread. Just take out a warranty.

Just don't buy one from walmart. Buy one from a small game store and you won't be at risk of buying one that has already been returned (walmart does that BTW).

I've had mine for about a year, and still no problems. I've only had it freeze about 2-4 times the whole year. However, I treat it like a baby. It's in a well ventalated, cool, dark place. I vacume it once every 1-2 weeks, plus the area around it. Its on it's horizontal surface, and I can't think of anything else to help treat it more besides buying a fan.

So far my Xbox 360 has broken once and only had to pay for shipping costs even without warranty.

However, that said I'm kind of dissapointed because my Xbox never once had any problem from 3 years of playing it while my Xbox 360 broke with minimal use and only 6 months into use.

What happened MS?  I mean Xbox was a tank and now the Xbox 360 is like fragile as hell.

Well, actually for the first year, buying an X360 has absolutely no risk at all.

But yes, some do break down, and of those that break down, some are due to owner neglect or ignorance, and some are due to hardware malfunction.  All I know, is mine hasn't broken down, and I hope it never does *knock on wood*.

I just make sure NO VENT HOLES ARE BLOCKED on the consoles case,  and I keep the room it is in pretty cool, like around 58-60 degrees.  And I NEVER play for more than 2 hours at a time without taking a break and letting the system rest for 20-30 mins.

Well for starters, you do not I repeat YOU DO NOT want to smash it with a hammer. That usually prevents it from breaking, oh and dropping it off of tall buildings lol. But seriously their isn't a very big chance of it breaking just give it lots of ventilation room, and I heard its better to keep it horizontal.

These problems are going to happen no matter what you do, sooner or later. You'll still find the occasional guy on his first unit, but they always get issues in the end. Fact is, if you're going to buy a console, 360 is the last choice at the moment till the issues are fixed. Going to take a chance MS will keep replacing dmged disks? I dont know if id be so up for that.
