I realize that there are forums regarding this topic, but I can't seem to find any that are recent and I want to take the new slim into consideration. Here's my dilemma. I like video games, and I would be happy with a used xbox because the most I play on it are Fable, Oblivion and Viva Pinata... don't make fun of my lack of variety. My boyfriend, on the other hand, is a gamer. He plays anything and everything and he'll spend a good portion of his day on them. He has a laptop that he plays WoW on, and he has a Wii. He would love to have an Xbox or PS3, but he can't really afford it. His birthday is coming up, and I was thinking about getting him a console. The PS3 is a little out of my price range, so after much debate I've decided on an Xbox360. This, however presents a new problem. Which one should I get him?? I'd really rather not spend more than $200, and the slim is $299. Is it worth it though? For me, the elite would be fine, but for my boyfriend I have no idea. I've been all over ebay and gamestop.com looking at used/refurbished Xbox elites. What's great is that, on ebay, I find a lot that include more than one controller and also come with games. So here are my questions. 1) Is it safe to buy a used Xbox? 2) If it's not, should I buy the elite bundle, or the new slim? 3) If it is safe, where should I buy it, and what should I keep an eye out for or be wary of? 4) For all you gamers, if you didn't have a console and couldn't afford one but really wanted one, would it matter if it was used? PLEASE HELP MEEEEE!!!

If you are going to buy a used xbox make sure it is a trsted user on a trusted site, if not avoid them or the site. I bought a used xbox 360 it is brilliant with a 20GB hard drive free dnt know why but that is a diffrent story.

Get a used Xbox 360 off Amazon. Cheap + no tax. Also get an Intercooler TS (own power supply) to prevent RRoD. Install games to the HDD to make the system quieter and have faster load times. Make sure you have at least 60 GB of HDD.

I wouldnt mind buying a used xbox. But dontbuy one from E-bay. It will most likely have the RROD. Buy a used elite model from Gamestop. Or you could just buy a new slim. Its only $100 dollars over what you want to spend, and you get a ton of more memory, and its Kinect ready. But no one cares about kinect. So just go with whatever you want to go with.

Yup. This is good because you have to think about if you want to have wireless connectivity. For the old Xbox 360 models you NEED to have Microsoft's external wireless adapter (or you can just buy two wireless bridges...). The wireless adapter costs approx. 80 dollars online. The Xbox 360 Slim is quieter, has 250 GB of memory (enough to install all your games to the HDD), built in wi-fi, and it's very quiet.

I implore you, if you really love your boyfriend, do not buy him a used Xbox. I made the same mistake a year ago. The first one had a disc reading error. The second had the red ring. The third had another disc reading error and the fourth had E74 (problem transmitting video). Mind you this was over the course of one month. So every week they would fail. Luckily Gamestop was obligated to give me a new used one since it was under 30 days and it didn't use up my warranty. After the E74 I just ponied up the 30 extra dollars and got an arcade. (I had bought a HDD used). Since then I have had no problems. Absolutely do not buy one off of EBay, I doubt they would be as generous as Gamestop was with taking it back in. (Yeah, I used generous and Gamestop in the same sentence, get over it to you haters out there)

If you really don't have the cash to spend on the new 360S and are going to get a used elite get it from gamestop and get their extended warranty. If the warranty can be renewed (not really sure about this) I would also do this just to be on the safe side.
