i don't think you can really tell the difference unless you placed two tv's right next to each other, one using component and one using hdmi. in my opinion, i'd find a way to get the cash to buy an hdmi cable, if you're gonna buy an expensive tv you might as well get as much out of it as you possibly can.

for 1080p it IS required that you have an HDMI cable (along with a 1080p enabled game, some arent). It is true the diffrence between the 1080i or 720p may be negligible. But if I wanted everything out of my electronics I would spring for it. BTW you dont have to buy an XBOX cable unless you need the audio breakout if you need the audio to hook into something else. Go to Costco or something and buy a generic one. There is no diffrence between the cheapest brand and the most expensive, its all digital it will work the same.

No it IS NOT required for 1080p. I have just the component cables and can get 1080p just fine with them. HDMI is to component like what S-Video was to the AV cables, a more convenient way (and slightly better quality) to connect picture and sound through one cable.

The Xbox 360 can output full 1080p over component cables, but not all TV's will accept the signal. You can also use a VGA cable.

MOST TVs do not accept a 1080p signal through component. HDMI cables are like $5 anyway..
