Look really carefully at the game discs for tiny scratches. Often enough, the Xbox360 can cause these miniscule scratches in games that will stop them from playing.
But if this is something that just suddenly happened, itslikely(but not definitely)just a case of the DVD drive failing to read the discs properly.
I'm assuming you've tried cleaning the lens, so what you're probably looking at is replacing the DVD drive. Not overly expensive($30-60), and there's a good amount of info online on how to do it.
yes i did check the lens, it was fine, crystal clear with no scratches... and i know for sure that all the games work as i have another 360 that everything plays on, i got this xbox for nothing because the person could not get it to work, so i figured i would have a go at it. but i dont think that replacing the drive would change anything, would it? it works fine when it plays dvds, but not for games, seems like it might be a setting somewhere but im not sure. on the dashboard when there is a game in the tray it says "play DVD" instead of the usual "play (whatever game you have in there) so it seems to me like there is a programming bug somewhere. does the DVD drive have any actual storage of data on it that replacing it would change anything?or does it just read the disc and send the info to the board? im not positive how the things technically work.. lol im just good at playing em :)jscribble1320
So has this Xbox360 ever worked with games? If not, then its possible that the person before you replaced the original drive with a replacement that wasn't compatible with Xbox360 games. Or maybe they didn't flash the drive properly, or at least switch the encryption of the original drive to the new one.
as far as ive been told yes, the xbox has worked before then all of a sudden started doing the "hey this isnt really an xbox" screen, but im not sure, is it possible for me to flash the drive? my comp has sata and the drive looks like sata, can i hook it up and run some program to fix it? jscribble1320
Yes, you can try flashing the drive. If you got the thing for nothing, then I guess you've not got a lot to lose, right?
I've never done it, so I'd rather not give you directions or anything, but you can probably find good info on how to do it by googling.
You'll need to find out which drive you have first, though. You can figure that out here:
