Can I use alternative USB devices to play Xbox games?

I read that you need a 360 HDD to emulate original xbox games when you play them on a 360. I just configured an 8GB usb thumb drive I had laying around to save my games on since I don't own an HDD. Could I theoretically use the thumb drive as my HDD instead? When the 360 configured it, it put somethig on it that took up space, over half a gig worth. So could I? Or is there just something special about an HDD where it only works with that?

I don't see why it wouldn't let you do what is decscribed, you're able to use an external HDD to store your 360 data on upto 16GB.

I'm wondering if it would let me play and save original xbox games only 360 as well though.
