I've been playing the new final fantasy this week and since it was realised in the UK last tuesday i've already clocked up 25 hours worth of game play. I've played that much that i dream of final fantasy and i have the worst head ach... even walking round the house feels odd lol...

I've now come of it for a day of two just to get my mind back but it makes me wonder what would happen if you spent 100 hours on a game within a short space of time or even longer.

what do you think would happen? and have there ever been any games where you've spent mega hours on them in a short space of time?

I usually can't sit still for more than a couple hours, so I don't really have that problem. But you should definitely take breaks during long play sessions. Get up, walk around, get some fresh air and a sandwich or something. Staring at a screen for too long can give you a huge headache.

If you eat and drink regularly while playing i don't see a problem. The lack of those can get you stressed and tired. In my humble opinion, it's not that good to play more than 4 hours straight.

If you use game to cut off yourself from everyone else and become a fat, couch-potato 5 hours a day video game player... Well, you won't die of it, but nobody will like you.

You're so insightful. I have played games for multiple hours a day only spending time to eat, sleep, and use the bathroom. I was one of those addicted to WoW and played for 36 hours straight and then wass back to it about 8 hours later. I also clocked 100+ hours in Tales of Vesperia in two weeks. I dont recommend doing this often but for me its fun to do every now and then.

Your eyes and occipital lobe in your brain can start to hurt, but unless your neglecting any other bodily functions you can't get too sick, just lazy.

Occipital lobe highlighted in green, controls and interprets ocular (eye) functions.

I gamed this last weekend at a LAN party for about 15-20 hours straight. It was awesome and fun, but definitely tiring. No sickness though, except a hangover from the previous night... Ouch...

I remember I once played Fallout 3 for almost an entire day strait, I mean like very little bathroom breaks, I skiped lunch, and I never left the room for about 20 hours. When I took a break I looked away from the TV and had a hard time telling reality from Fallout 3.

You can't get sick just from playing video games for a long time. However, if you don't ever break to eat, drink, pee, sleep, etc then you can make yourself sick because of that. You might also lose some muscle strength in your legs from not using them for a long time, but that can be remedied with a short walk. Other than that, you can get a headache from playing games for ANY amount of time. It just varies from person to person.

Or go out in the sun every now and then.

Maybe you have epilepsy or something, the game is really bright and colourful.

Walk around, look outside the window. You're supposed to take regular breaks.

Yeah its a weird feeling going outside when its a sunnyday, birds are chirping, trees everywhere, fresh oxygen and you've been playing video games for 4 hours straight. The longer i play the weirder i feel and the crappier i tend to play so like anything in the world moderation is key.

I get very restless and bored after about three hours of anything...most of the time. If I force myself to continue playing even after the "bored" point, I may have terrible dreams about the game. I had lots of beef against Warcraft 3, but I had spent a good 40 bucks on the battle chest so I tried to like it. I tried a lot of the major mods and custom games and I played a lot of the campaign in one day, and I ended up having a nightmare about WC3. *Shudder*

No, you won't get sick from it. There are a couple of "althoughs" attached to that, though. Number one, you can strain your eyes to the point that you get a screaming headache (which others have mentioned), which sucks. You can also permanently damage your eyes if you continue playing long hours once they are strained. Number two, you can make yourself feel sick if you spend too long focusing on a screen and never looking away. I will eventually wind up feeling pretty nauseous. Doesn't happen to everyone, but can happen. Finally, if you play so much that you never take time to excercise, your immune system will suck and you will eventually wind up getting actually sick. Sitting around doing essentially nothing is not good for your immune system. Not technically the game's fault, but still bad.

Well you have to remember to do activities required by the body, such as: eat, drink, and sleep. Having your eyes glued to the tv for days on end will make you feel strange for sure, so just don't do it. Take a break every couple of hours for at least 30 minutes.

Because video games are so mentally stimulating you'll find that after playing for a very long time the effects will stick around for a bit. After playing for several hours of the same game right before going to sleep you might find that all of your dreams reflect the game. You also might find that you start to think about the game so much that you might start trying to tackle real world solutions with in game solutions.

I also think that this is why people used to think that video games would make children shoot up their schools. Too bad most people have enough common sense not to.

Plus, given how much they stimulate your mind I bet video games might be able to help us in real world situations, such as problom solving, play Myst, after you play Myst I'm sure you could solve some serious suduko or cross word puzzles.
