FF XIII didn't really interest me either. However, I haven't really liked JRPGs since the SNES era. The only JRPG I liked since then was Tales of Symphonia for the GCN. There was some JRPG that was released for the 360 early on that I tried to play but got bored. Can't think of the name for the life of me. :?

You didn't really ask a proper question, hence the lack of answers.

My advice would be to carry on playing it to see if it begins to make any sense as it progresses.

more you play JRPgs more you'll understand them. start with simple JRPGs like the world ends with you or FF 1&2. you'll get used to them.

well if a pink haired girl with bunny ears and her name is storm is fighting a gigantic robot/man with a giant sword and a horse that can fly, i would certainly be more concerned on the story on how this all happened

Because there's no real way to explain it. It's a JRPG series of games unconnected in plot but has similar themes. You're starting the game with as much knowledge as someone who's been playing the series for over 20 years.

this is from wikipedia may contain a few spoilers idk so dont read if it does like isaid i dont play final fantasy just tryin to help the guy out .

The plot of Final Fantasy XIII takes place in a world known as Pulse and revolves around the story of the fal'Cie , mechanical beings with godlike power created from crystals residing inside them. People who are marked by the fal'Cie for greater purposes are called l'Cie . Each l'Cie has a Focus, a goal the fal'Cie wants him or her to fulfill within a certain amount of time; however, the fal'Cie do not explicitly say what the goal is: l'Cie learn what their Focus is by interpreting visions that are given to them. L'Cie gain the ability to summon Eidolons (monsters who fight with the l'Cie), but this ability comes with a price: if a l'Cie dies before completing his or her Focus, fails to tame his or her Eidolon, or fails to complete his or her Focus within a set period of time, he or she becomes a monster known as a Cie'th. If a l'Cie does complete his or her Focus, the reward is not much better: permanent transformation into a crystal. For this reason, being chosen as a l'Cie is seen as a curse.

Some 1,300 years ago, a fal'Cie named Orphan constructed a paradise for humanity: the shell-like city of Cocoon, which floats high above the surface of Pulse. Then Orphan created life forms and machines for Cocoon's inhabitants to use, and humanity flourished. A war was fought between the Pulse and Cocoon, and Cocoon prevailed. However, fear lingered in the hearts of the people of Cocoon, for the day another invasion might come from the world beneath again.

Although most Cocoon citizens have never seen Pulse with their own eyes, they have been told that it is a dangerous place that has strange effects on those who venture down to its surface. Consequently, anyone who is discovered to have visited Pulse is immediately subjected to quarantine and exile by the theocratic government of Cocoon, known as the Sanctum. The Sanctum enforces this policy with its strongest military branch, PSICOM.

As Snow leads the resistance group, Team Nora, in an attempt to stop the purging of civilians, the mysterious Lightning fights her way past PSICOM soldiers with the aid of Sazh to find a Pulse fal'Cie, Anima, who turned her sister, Serah (who is also Snow's fiancée), into a l'Cie. Through a chain of events, these three, along with two exiles, Vanille and Hope, are forced by the fal'Cie of Pulse to become l'Cie, and with that became enemies of humanity with the Focus of bringing about the downfall of Orphan and Cocoon. By the end of the game Vanille and Fang both decide to sacrifice them self in hope to stop the main antagonists explosion after being defeated

MAILER_DAEMON just gave you the answer. We don't know what is to come in a Final Fantasy game. They aren't sequels but different stories in each game. Oh and toss out your reason of disbelief in a Final Fantasy game. The are imaginative.

I think the art direction looks great. Very slick and stylish. That's the only positive thing I have to say about FF13.

Overall, I can't stand these JRPG storylines. So cliche and childish. I can't fathom why people enjoy these games.

alot of FF games you need to play from start to finish to understand and even then some people don't catch onto everything. After FF9 I haven't cared for any of the stories (well 12 a little) , BTW someone mentioned they liked tales of symphonia, and I liked it too and FF 13 looks like it has some similar elements in battle.

The clue is in the title .... final FANTASY? Its a fantasy game. And each main game tells a new story, so you don't need to have played any previous FF games to understand what happens in XIII. I havent got XIII yet so i can't exactly speak about it.

Sometimes in a Final Fantasy game, I suppose that the story can start out a little confusing at first, but it comes together as the game proceeds. Final Fantasy games are largely story-heavy and also heavy on character development, both in the story and in the game itself. Final Fantasy games can take quite an investment of your time.

It's a great series.

Each FF game (well most of them) tell a new story, playing your friends game halfway through or where he is at isn't going to give you any legit answers, try playing it from the begining.

I can agree with the content of this post, but not the sentiment. It's a painful soap-opera-like series. But it's pretty, well funded, and the plot's so deep you can drown(if you can get far enough into it, the water smells bad and looks like a septic tank to me O_O). But if you enjoyed the one you played, you'll probably enjoy the rest of them and it'll make a bit more sense how they fit together. At least, you'll like XII, X, and X2. VIII was a bit different then the current theme of Final Fantasy's.

There's not much to tell. Either you are intrigued by Final Fantasy or you are not. I prefer to stay as far away from them as I can, as I find Final Fantasy games to be extremely and flamboyantly homosexual, and that's not really my thing. I'm sure the creators of the franchise laugh their way to the bank every time they release something with the brand name, as they know that Americans, Japanese, and people all over the world will salivate over it and lap it up regardless of how truly "imaginative" or "innovative" it proves not to be. Most often I find it hard to relate to the odd dialogue of the series, which no doubt loses something in the Japanese to English translaton. Ususally there's some maniacal mega-conglomerate at work, or some silly environmentalist undertones throughout. All-in-all, the plot tends to be very ho-hum and not really reminiscient of anything that deserves the attention it gets.

Maybe I do not like Final Fantasy anymore because I have grown up since the days of FFVII, or maybe I really have just moved on from playing games that have long, tedious, mandatory, drawn out story segments and whiny, whimpy protagonists that I cannot relate to in any fashion. Even the "strong silent types" usually end up saying extremely dumb things. Whatever it may be, I get my role-playing kicks from Westernized RPG's these days, i.e. Fallout, Fable (if you can still call it an RPG), and Mass Effect. Final Fantasy is just a blemish on the face of the game world, one with an enormous fanbase that means that it will never disappear no matter how dry it has become. It's hard to imagine why it is so staid within the game world, but then again I guess it just doesn't matter to me anymore. I think it's due time for it to kick the bucket, along with Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Castlevania, etc. etc.

Didn't mean to offend anyone by this post, so try not to get all butt hurt over anything I said.

No no... the point myself and a few others have been trying to make is that the other Final Fantasy games have nothing to do with XIII. What happened in the other games in the series won't help you understand anything that's going on in this game; I wasn't trying to be "smart" with him, but rather I was being honest and concise.

If you want backstory on what's going on in Final Fantasy XIII, you have to play Final Fantasy XIII. If you want to know what's going on in Final Fantasy III, you play Final Fantasy III. The only FF game to date with a prequel is Final Fantasy VII; if you want to know what's going on there, you play Final Fantasy VII... then play Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII to find out the complete backstory.

I just don't try to understand games like FF, it's too much to keep track of. I've played past FF games but I never really knew what we were fighting for. I'm assuming it's civilizations survival?

Square was going under back in the 80's and they decided they needed to make one final game before they went under. Turned out they called it Final Fantasy and was a huge success. So here was are what 23 years later? and the next installment is due out tomorrow. Also if you're talking about FFXIII i'm curious to how your friend is already playing it, but anyway like others said all the main installments in the series have nothing to do with each other. This being 1-13 and other spin-offs and such. Basically if you played the games back in the day you would have fell in love with the fresh battle systems, deep stories, and insanely good music compliments of Nobuo Uemetsu. Also over the years Final Fantasy Fans have become familiar with many "Icons" I guess you could call them. This could be anything from summon magic like Bahamut, Weapons like Ragnarok, Enemies like Ahrimans and Flans, appearances of a character named Cid in every title since Final Fantasy II, and creatures such as Chocobo's and Moogles. Combine Icons like that with top notch graphics, deep deep stories that keep fans buzzing years later, music you find yourself humming for what seems like no reason, and original progression systems. Not just level up and gain some attributes. You can actually chose what to learn and what to increase your skills in. Examples of this Materia system, Junction system, Sphere Grid, License board, and in FFXIII you get to progress through the crystarium.

I don't really know if that answers any of your question. While you don't need to play the old games to pick up FFXIII and not be lost, some of us who have been fans for the past 20 years are just full of Nostalgia over some of the familiar things we will be able to see in FFXIII. Even if you don't like the game you should still be able to respect the beauty of this game since it is gorgeous. Cheers to FFXIII folks! Less than 24 hours away.
