Is there any point in buying the more expensive cat 6 ethernet cable for online play? Or does that only matter if you have 1 GB/sec speed connection?

I connect directly to a modem on a 100 mb/s cable internet connection. May use a router in the future.

Not any real world difference. Because how many MB is your internet connection? Probably somewhere between 3mb-15mb. So if they are the same price, get the Cat6, but if not...it's not worth extra money. Even for a home network, Cat6 is pointless.

50 ft (which I don't need) of the Cat 5 is 19.99, 25 feet of the Cat 6 is 27.99. They had all Cat 6 in the computer section, but a 50 ft Cat 5 in the video game section.

I'll just get the Cat5 50 ftand roll up and tie the excess.

dude. go to monoprice.com for all of your cable needs.

you can get what you need for $4.43 + s/h (which is WAY less than $20 at the store).

hdmi cables, too. $3.00 and they're just as good as $100 cables in most applications.
