This is what i believe to be the problem. They're called X-clamps. They're designed to hold the heatsink onto the 360 CPU/GPU from the other side of the motherboard. The problem is that they put pressure directly on the motherboard in order to do so. Since they are applying pressure to a surface that routinely gets pretty hot, warping of the motherboard occurs. Once the motherboard has warped enough, the heatsinks no longer make good contact and anyone who has ever tried to start a PC with the CPU heatsink unattached will tell you that the PC will fail to successfully boot because the hardware has nowhere to transfer the heat. This is why i believe the RRoD is so common.
