I've heard conflicting reports and can't seem to get a straight answer on the official site. I have a gold account and a silver account. I want to change my gold gamertag to the gamertag used by my silver account. I heard that I would be able to pay 800pts to change the silver accounts name to free it up then pay another 800pts on the gold account and change it to the name I just free'd up. Is this possible at all? I wan't to make aboslutely sure of the facts before I go speanding 800pts to change the silver account... it would be messed up if it didn't work and just payed 800pts to lose the silver name I had.
You could do that, but all it would do is change the name and not the amerscore or anything like that....Personally I don't understand why you want to do that but if you seriously want to do something just call customer support and see what they can do to help. The number is 1-800-4MY-XBOX.
APOLLOCJD... thats all I'm trying to do is take the name from one and give it to the other. I e-mailed xbox support and worded my question in pretty much the same way. There response was... "We are sorry for the inconvenience and as I understand, you want to change your gamertag. Unfortunately once the gamertag is already created, you can't use it again. You can only use the gamertag once." Which is what I hear alot...once it's been used it can't be used again. Yet other people say paying a total of 1600pts can accomplish the change. Maybe there's confussion of what a gamertag is or a "name" is or if both are the same thing to some people. But to say it as simple as possible... I want to use the name I have one account on a different account and allegedly it will cost me 1600pts to do so. Thanks for taking the time to post.

I'm pretty sure the names don't 'free up' when you change them. Even though you're no longer using it it would still be unavailable for anyone else to change to the now unused name.

From what I've seen you wont be able to recover that accounts' exact gamertag. I have a friend that changed his tag like 3 times in the same week and changed it back to it the first one he had, but it wouldn't let him get his old tag. The reason is because the tag is registered into the system so you wont be able to rename yourself to whatever you want UNLESS you make the same exact tag but for example have the letter "O" and replace it with a "0"(Zero) that should work, be creative replace letters for numbers.8)
Yes, I've heard a story of a famous dude with a 40000+ gamerscore, who changed his name. Then another guy with a 300 score changed his name to the old famous guy's gt.
My friend actually wanted me to help him with this and you can do it just so you know. If you change the silver account to something random than the name you want would be freed up. You can just change the gold account to the silver's name. The only thing is you're spending about $20 to get it done, but if you think it's worth it than go ahead man.
Thanks guys for the helpful info. I'm going to give it a try and if it doesn't work I'll just consider it a loss! I'll report back whether it worked or not.
