1st: learn how to aim, sparring with a couple of friends on a small map helps, but I doubt that's something a new player would get much benefit from. But just try to get comfortable with the sticks.
2: Practice. CoD is about practice and adapting. Learn how other ponies play, and find a way to beat it.
3. Be aware. Minimap is crucial, so is sound. What you see directly is only half of what COD is about. In a game where the pony who shoots first wins...the pony who see's first will mostly likely shoot first etc.
4. Play with good players. I can't stress this enough. Even if you're losing, or coming bottom of the team, the things you can learn from good players will mould the player that you can grow to be.
5. Play all the time. If you go even a week without playing, you will lose touch. Sure, the basics will stay with you. But the game and how it is played changes, it's worth keeping yourself in the loop. Experience is everything when it comes to CoD. Skill comes from experience.
