Ok, so I'm really angry.  I bought no name VGA cables to use for my 1080P monitor.  When I got them, I wasn't blown away, but I stuck with them.  Then I got a 5.1 sound system and realized that my no names didn't have an optical audio output.  So I put back in my component to enjoy my 5.1.  I noticed the visuals looked different, but I thought it was just going down to 720P that did it.  Today I got a different set of VGA cables, they didn't have the offical MS ones, but these were good and expensive. I plug them in and I notice a complete downgrade in visuals.

Here are pictures to prove it:

Are all VGA cables like this?  Is the signal really this bad? It's not even worth having a 1080P monitor if games look worse.  Can someone who has the official MS cables do the same comparison and post the pics?  I'll buy the official ones if they're worth it.

1080P is native You actually think it looks better? If you zoom in on any detail, especially in the dash pix, you'll see that VGA lacks definition. -BenE

um... i hate to break it to you but 1080p is not a native resolution. 1024 x 768 is a native resolution of a monitor. something like maybe 1280 x1024 is a native resolution. native resolution basically is the number of pixels your monitor has on it. it will be listed in your user's manual and probably on the box somewhere in a bulleted list full of other info you don't know what it means...

I have the official VGA cables and a 720p HDTV. It looks much better over VGA. Some people complain though that VGA, on their TV, Makes the image a bit soft. Turn up the sharpness on your TV and adjust the colors. The TV's color and sharpness is probably tuned to Component inputs and HDMI. What TV do you have? To me the 1080p pics look better. I think your tv just needs adjusting. Also remember this; All content on the 360 is run at 720p right now. The 360 has a digital scaler which scales the 720p signal to 1080p. You aren't getting that much of a benefit yet from using VGA. Games that can run at 1080p are on the way though. I'd definatly get the M$ certified cable. It is very well constructed!

There are plenty of monitors, like this one, that support 1080p natively.  Any monitor that has a native resolution of 1920x1080 is 1080p native, and 1920x1200 monitors will display it just fine as well.  People that make these kind of "authoritative" statements but just lead people that listen to them astray are really counter-productive.  If you don't know what you're talking about then stop talking.

I have the 1080P westy just like that one, but the w1 not the w3. Anyway, You can't actually adjust the sharpness when using VGA. It's really weird. It has a Phase option, is that VGA version of Sharp? In person it's night and day better in component than VGA, but yeah, maybe it just needs tuning. The most glaring difference you can see in the pics is on the lettering in the dash, there is an obvious bright outline as part of the beveled look of the text, the VGA barely has any of that, even with the contrast and saturation turned way up. Can someone with VGA cables take VS pics like mine? So i can compare. -BenE

Me too. However, you must know that there aren't many 1080p native games. Those pics show "upscaled" 1080p. Virtua Tennis 3 and some other sports game will play 1080p native real soon. Buy or rent those to see the real difference. Also, they say that 1080p only makes a difference at 50 inch screens or larger.

Here are my pics.  I tried to get some in game pics. but they were all coming out blury.  These are very indicitive of the diff. between component and vga on my tv.

The stupid HTML message editor isn't letting me post pics in this thread so here are the links.

Component 720P:  Notice the oversaturation and jagged lettering

VGA 720P:  Notice the Natural color saturation and smooth lettering

it's hard to compare bad pictures... but on some screens colors through vga seem washed out... but Kameo is not a 1080P native game... so it will just be upscaled.... it's not that it will add detail or anything.. hope you realise that. you could play it at 720P and it will look the same on most screens....
