I once managed to snap most of the plastic casing of a Genesis controller in two over my knee after dying for the 100th time in some game I can't even remember now. Man some games from the 8 and 16 bit eras were incredibly hard - and often you would have to replay a bunch of difficult sequences just to get back to where you just died.
During that time I also spiked my SNES controller off the floor more times than I'd like to admit.

wernt they just miles easier, used to have tresure island dizzy for my spectrum, and its about 2-3 hours to complete if you know it off the top of your head, and you only had one life. and had to start again from the beginging if ya died. canny harsh by todays standards.
it took a real long time before games decided ok we will let ya have continues like the arcades, and some games wud only give you a few. most games wudnt have save game option, if you were lucky you might have a pasword system like lemmings to get back where u were,
games got miles easier these days, first off they let ya load the game and not even have lives no more, if ya die its fine go back to the last save at the beginging of the level, then started having check points all da way thru the level so u only go backa tiny bit when u f up.
now its even easier where if you get shot at and loose energy its fine, ya dont even have to pick up some food or a first aid kit off the floor. just wait 10 seconds and we'll top it back up for ya.
no wonder they are that many games where people just complete them in a few days or the first week they get them. even on the hardest difficulty modes, stuff like ur energy restarting and endless saves and check points make even the hardest of games more than doable if you game to try and try again
