How long should these batteries last?  I get little more than an hour or so before they're 3/4 depleted...

Don't trust the dashboard battery gauge. Don't trust the blinking light on the controller either. The only reliable indicator is when the controller actually shuts itself off. Even then you can just turn it back on and get 1-2 hours more use.
