Okay, quick question here.

I am considering getting a 360, primarily to play Rock Band on it. I am looking to go as cheap as possible up front, and was wondering if the Core system (without the hard drive) would be enough to do that. I think it comes with a 256mb memory card, but I am having a hard time finding a good answer to the question of 'will this be enough to get on Live, download some stuff and save my games'. A hard drive would be an eventual purchase, but not something I would buy right off.

So will I be alright with just the base system?

Thanks.

Yes the $280 arcade 360 works fine w/Rock Band. You can play on live and download a few things, but not game demos

You won't be able to download to many songs though, but just for playing RB it'll be fine

No you won't be able to play online or download songs because you need to be connected to Xbox Live for that. And you need an HDD to connect to Live.

That is ultimately what I am trying to figure out. Some places it looks like you only need a memory card to get to Live, not that you need the hard drive. Even the main xbox 360 site doesn't make this clear.

Yeah, it is a bit unclear if you actually need the HDD to play online. It's not an issue for me because I have an HDD. But I know for a fact that you won't be able to download game content, I.E. new songs, for rockband if you don't have an HDD. Once you do get online though, you'll immediately see the advantages of having an HDD. Honestly, you would be better off just getting a pro system with the 20GB HDD.

You need to contact M.S. about your questions, the only game I have heard you cannot play on XBL w/an arcade is Burnout Paradise because it requires too much memory while playing on line.

You should call MS. I'm about 95% sure you can use all the features of rock band without a HDD but i've never done it my self.

i think you need the hard drive to be able to download songs and such. plus if you're eventually going to get a hard drive, you may as well do it straight away and save some money in the long run.

dude i am 100% sure you DO NOT need a hard drive to go on-line, just the memory unit...I got a launch core console in 2005 and all that I could find was a memory unit, and I was able to play on Xbox Live...

If you need a hard drive later just pick up a 3rd party external one for much cheaper. It won't look as cool but you could really get more space for less cash.

Yes, you can get online with the Arcade Console. And Rock Band will work fine with it! You might not have alot of memory to save songs and stuff on your memory card, but you can atleast get online and you can still download some stuff.

I didn't think that you could use an external HD to store anything but your own media. You can't put game saves or DLC on it. I'd go with the Pro system because MS put INSANE prices on their HDs if you don't get one with the system.
