Creating a LIVE ID early?

I'm getting an Xbox 360 for Christmas, but I could set up a LIVE account now, on Xbox.com, I think. The main reason for this would probably be to get a decent Gamertag before the few I've thought of that I like are taken.

What effect would setting it up early have? I know you get a free 1 month Gold subscription at some point - is this when you first set up? Because if so I'd lose several days' worth from that. What do you do with an Xbox.com account if you don't have an Xbox, anyway?

Could I set up an account with some random hotmail address or something, to take the Gamertag I want, then cancel it and set up the real thing when I get the Xbox?

I think you're better off writing a list of gamertags you'd like, if you're creative enough it's likely not to be taken. And you get the full month!:P

Mmm, I did that - then I played around with the website (entering a dummy address to get to the register page) and I only found 2 that weren't taken! (Perhaps I'm not that creative :P )

But yeah, the full free month would probably be worth it and I guess I've got a couple of days to think of some more :)

Yeah, you can do that. I created my name a long, long time before I got onto Xbox Live.
