Hi, let me start by saying I know nothing about xbox360 other than the RROD that's in the news.

My stepson wants one for Christmas. He says He needs the 60GB and a big memory card. (he can't tell me why he needs it, just that he needs it) I don't really understand, why do you need a memory card if it has a HDD? If a RROD happens does it wipe out the HDD? Can the HDD be backed up like a PC HDD? Are there things that can be done to help prevent RROD?

Thanks for any advice!!!

There is no real reason why you would need a memory card if you are getting a 60GB HDD, but as teh the answer to your other question aswell, a memory card is a good way to back your data up on a pc but you don't really need to because rrod don't erase data. You can't really prevent rrod but it is not a good idea to leave your console on for long periods of time, that can cause it (by long periods of time I mean like 24 hours straight, for example playing for 7 hours straight would not really cause a problem). Hope that helps.

Well, from my understanding, there's only one kind of memory card to be has (512mb, a small card.)  In my opinion, you should spring for an Elite.

Forget a 512mb memory card, the Elite has a 120gb hard drive, the biggest around.  RROD are harder to get on an Elite, and it's black, which your son will love.

I'm 13, and I got my 360 pro a little over 2 years go.  I regret not getting an Elite.  With the new NXE update, you can install games on to the hard drive, making them load faster and making the 360 run quieter (the optical drive doesn't have to run.)  An Elite is $400, and it'll come with everything you need.  Also, I'm pretty sure the Elite also comes bundled with the 2 free games.

Since the pro comes with a 60gb hard drive, and the Elite comes with a 120gb hdd, the Elite is a better deal right off the bat (a 120gb hdd is $150 retail.)

Trust me, your stepson does not need the 360 Elite (60GB) version. I've had my 360 for awhile and I get along just fine with the Pro version (12GB). If RRoD happens, simply be sure you have registered the console, and contact Microsoft via phone or their website (recommended). RRoD doesn't wipe your HDD either. If it happens, send the 360 in and you'll get a new one and your HDD will be fine. However, their are different RRoDs. Be sure to check the cables in the back of the TV if it happens, because theres a certain type of RRoD which just lets you know the cables aren't properly hooked up. Sadly, there is nothing to prevent the RRoD, no security system or anything. Place the 360 in a mildly open, cool spot to prevent overheating, and you'll be OK. Check Microsoft's website for more details.

that's not true,

don't get a memory card as you won't need it since you will have the 60g hdd.

i'm also buying a 60G xbox tommorow can't wait. i think you should buy one tommorow also because there are alot of black friday deals around.

Contrary to what he says, he probably doesn't need a memory card, as the hard drive is detachable itself. RROD doesn't wipe any data, it's simply a hardware problem in the console. The hard drive cant be backed up, though there really shouldnt be any need to back it up. RROD is pretty much unavoidable, really, though microsoft say keeping your console upright, well ventilated and not using it for extended periods of time all reduce the likelyhood you'll get the problem. Someone above me said you'll want the elite with a 120gb hard drive for installing games, but I think the 60gb should be fine. Games on average take up about 5gb of space when you install them (something which is optional to reduce load times and reduce the noise your 360 produces), so you should be able to fit 10 games on and have plenty of room left for game saves and demos etc. He won't even have that many games to begin with, I'm assuming, so buying him something more expensive that won't immediately benefit him seems silly. Hope I helped :)

He may want the memory card to put his profile on to take over to a friends house to play on their xbox splitscreen etc. If that is the reason then you really should get the memory card. It is very convenient when playing on friends xboxs.

Ya you got your facts wrong. There is no 12GB hard drive for the 360 bundles. The Elite(Black) is 120GB Hard Drive and The Pro is 60Gb.

#1 He doesn't need 60gb unless you plan on buying him like 20 hours of video and he will never delete any of (you can redownload it all for free). Him asking for a memory card also makes me think he's just saying stuff. #2 You can't back up the HDD, but the HDDs don't get messed up easily. #3 If it RROD, which is unlikely for the new models, you keep your HDD and only send in the system itself. So he won't lose any data. -- Here is what i'd suggest. You buy an Arcade unit on black friday and hide it. MS sells 20gb HDDs for $30, but you'll need to already own a unit. So I say buy one now and register for the HDD and you should have everything well before Christmas. There was one store doing a crazy deal that was like an Arcade, 20GB HDD and a second controller for only $199. That'd be the move to make in my opinion. I've got 16 games, downloaded content for those games, game demos and a few tv shows on my 20gb HDD and I still have like 4 gb free (and it only ships with like 14gb available). You only need a 60gb if you want hours upon hours of video and you never want to delete a demo, even if you've actually purchased the full version.

If you're short on cash, get him an arcade system with a memory card.  If you have the money just buy him the pro console. The old 20gb was plenty, so the new 60gb should acomodate needs, especially the one of a child.

The RRoD issue is something that just happens and it's turning for the better with time.

Yeah, like others have stated already, he'll only need a memory card if he'll need to transfer memory to a friends house or something. Also, the new consoles most likely won't get RROD, I've even had mine since Christmas 2006 and it has yet to fail on me. And the Pro version is what I recommend, the Elite's memory is unnecessary unless you're going to have loads of media files like videos and movies, etc.

THANKS, you guys are awesome.

I am going to check the black friday deals, yeah, he wants some extra controllers and stuff, getting a little tight on the budget. it's like if I get the bigger drive I might can't get the controllers, then his friends can't play. :(

Thanks for the help, guess I better get out my paper and go stand in line somewhere.

DONT get the Elite. Get the 60gb or 20gb HDD and the extra controllers will benefit him much more than extra HDD space that he won't even need. Heck, maybe with the extra money you could get him a game too.

Why can't he tell you why he needs a memory card? Like everyone has said, it's not really necessary if you already have a HDD. Also, the RRoD is covered by a 3 year warranty, so you shouldn't have to worry about that problem for a while.

Yep, he's probably too young to understand that he doesn't even need a memory card. The bigger HDD will be fine and make the memory card useless.

wow... he's getting a little picky now isn't he. I'd be very thankful for just the console alone. (even just an arcade console)

Well you can recover your gamertag from xbox live but that takes anywhere from 5-15 minutes. It is very inconvenient. Although its not a nessesity a memory card can be VERY convenient.

I agree. If I were you I'd forget the memory card and instead get Xbox Live Gold. He'll enjoy that more than he would if he got the memory card, which I think is useless. Even if he is playing at his friends house, he could either bring his hard drive or just download his profile onto his friends Xbox. I don't see the point in getting the memory card. You may want to ask him why he wants the memory card so much though.

360 w/ 60 gb drive, that was the one on sale and I read on XBox.com that the arcade model isn't backwards compatible with the old xbox games.

don't know if that's just a sales thing or not, but the arcade model with 20gb drive was only on sale at one place and too many people in line. found the pro one somewhere else so i grabbed it.

thanks again for your help!!!!

Just buy him an Arcade and tell him to suck it up and when he runs out of space you'll pick up a 60GB HDD for $99 (or a 120GB for $149). Plus, with the Arcade, you can get a free 512mb memory unit from Microsoft (xbox.com) or a 20GB HDD for only $29 thanks to the NXE update that takes up too much space. Also, it's Black Friday, and I just got an Arcade + 20GB + extra controller for $213 shipped online (circuitcitythisisnotanad) and there are tons of deals like it if you buy now.

Forget about his friends... you're his dad, you're not fathering the neighbors too, so don't worry about controllers for now. Just get him a 60gb one. Don't worry about the memory card, it's useless and something tells me your kid isn't really informed on the RROD issue. If anything does happen (high chance it won't) you'll be covered.

well first question is to ask your son if he knows the differnce from hard drive and a memory hard lol. lol ask him that lol but no hardrive is what u need dont gte no memory card

but he get him the 60gb xbox it do him well no matter what u get not arcade because comes with no hard drive

rrod is hardwere failer so no hte harddrive is like a portalthing u can take off and on just like a portalable hardrive for a computer if u ever seen one  the only why a hardrive get wipe is if  the hard drive fails  and no hard drive cant be backed up  everthing can be redownloaed off marketplace and if u payed for anything need  be redownloed loged on that account  btw make th account say he 18 or someone might regret it but save games will be deleted rankes for online games is sa=ved on his gamertag which is will never get deleted

well new xboxs are more rare to get rrod in firstplace in feb i know was reported that xbox was at 6% failer rate vs its 20% from last year  then but number one dont put it in a enterainment center with closer doors or even in small place or sit stuff on stop of it and most inporten dont block the vents. theres 5 cents that suck in air and one blows out, ones that suck in 1 on its right side if laying down 2 on the bottum 2 on top then the blow out one  is on the back  and thats about it and u got 3 year warrenty for 3 lights vs the 1 for any problem and dont let the son open the xbox or the warrent be gone  lol goodluck many ppl dont keep t-8/8 around anyways

I know it's the holidays, but you aren't shopping for your son's friends, are you? Unless you're playing with him, 1 controller is enough, and if you are, 2 is enough. If he gets friends over, they can bring their own controllers. There's no need to spend your money on the happiness of children that aren't yours.

Well you can only have so much porn on a hard drive...
