Dawn of the Dead has been playing in HD on one of the pay channels lately so I decided to DVR it.  After watching it, I was amazed at how similar Dead Rising is to this movie.  Is the game based on that movie or just a very big coincidince?

oh, it's similar on purpose.  dawn of the dead has been, more or less, the king of zombie movies since it came out.  the whole game is a nod to zombie movies of old.

The game is based of off Dawn of the Dead, (the original, not that 2004 remake piece of crap) if I remember correctly either the back of the case or one of the start up screens says "this game is in no way related to George A. Romero's 'Dawn of the Dead' or its writers" the developers made no excuses about it, they basically made DotD the game.

If I remember the original correctly (b&w?) Dead Rising is definatly much closer to Dawn of the Dead 2004 than the original, whether they intended it or not.  The mall is almost identical in layout and use.  Even some of the characters can be compared in movie and game.  A few shots at the beginning of the movie really reminded me of the game as well.

I actually liked the 2004 remake, the thing i found a little different is the speed in which the zombies could move.  Every zombie flick I have seen, included the game in question, zombies are sloooooow.  Begining of the 2004 remake zombies were hauling butt.  The only thing I didnt like was they dont really explain where the zombies came from, or maybe they did, I will re-watch to make sure I didnt just miss it.

There are messages all over the packaging and even IN the game that indicate this game is no way related to etc. etc. Dawn of the Dead.

How can you make a zombie ANYTHING without using ideas from that movie?  I was somewhat upset that they had to put all this crap in/on the game to satisfy some legal issues or something.  Legalease run wild.

I stand corrected, I was thinking of a different zombie flick.  The original was set in shopping mall as well, I will have to check it out.

Well by putting them in a shopping mall (the main setting of the movie) how could you not draw a correlation between the two?

the original was in color, you're thinking of night of the living dead, that was black and white.

i am a hardcore zombie fan, and i actually liked the remake more than the original.  i found it to be a lot more fun to watch.  and yeah, there was a slight (ie: huge) difference in the speed that zombies moved.  but old zombies moved slow for a reason.  they were pretty harmless by themselves, it was a power in numbers kind of idea.

and they don't explain where the zombies come from in the remake, because they remade the second move, not the first (night of the living dead).  but the 2004 wasn't about messages or explaining anything, it was about fun, and hot damn was it fun.

I'm sorry, I don't like remakes, but that Dawn of the Dead remake was good. Compared to other remakes. I mean, I have both the old and the new one, and I saw the old one first, but I still like the remake more.

I went to the IMDB website for DotD 2004 and the concesus is most people liked the movie.  I also gathered (even though I didnt see the original) that its not really a remake since the story is so different even different characters.

Glad to see I wasnt the only one that like the movie.

It doesn't seem similar to me at all, except for the setting being a mall. I've seen Dawn of the Dead. Other than being in a mall and having everything in the mall at your disposal, it doesn't seem connected at all.

One, the DotD remake was great. Secondly, Dead Rising simply used every zombie movie cliche out there, there was really nowhere the game could have been set that hasn't been seen in a zombie movie before. The mall is just probably the most easily recognized setting outside of the setting of Night of the Living Dead.

Ummm....That piece of crap remake you talk of is looked at as a masterpiece of a remake. Check around on reviews bro. AND I have both the original on bluray and the 04 remake on bluray...04 gets my vote. I actually got extremely bord watching the original and could not wait for it to end.

It's so close to Dawn of the Dead that they have a disclaimer on the box saying 'This is NOT Dawn of the Dead: The Game'. Not in those exact words, but that's what it means.
