Well, I've put off getting Bioshock as I feel I have had the game ruined for me storywise, but after hearing all the critical acclaim, I really want to get it. I wanted to ask people who have completed the game if the details I know are very important to the plot or am I just blowing it out of proportion?

I don't know exact details, but the things that I had hinted at me where that you had a present with you on the plane and that the plane crashed for a reason....are these elements important to the story? And please do not spoil anymore if they are...

No, If you feel like playing it play it. The twists are amazing, the story compelling. If all you know is that you have a "Present" and that the "Plane crashed for a Reason" you know nothing.

no don't worry about that, it seems to me that essential storyline aspects have not been revealed to you, and even if they have it really doesn't matter. bioshock is worth picking up regardless of what details you have heard

What you've been told about Bioshock is like if someone told you "There's this robbery that went bad" about Resevoir Dogs.

Thats the opening scene, doesnt mean a thing.

The story sucked in my opinion.

The background is cool, but the story of your actual adventure blows.

the necklace and stuff you see in the beginning during the airplace crash has NOTHING to do with the storyline at all.

You only crash there because that's how Dagny found Galts Gulch in Atlas Shrugged, which is what BioShock is (poorly) tried to rip off from. Still an awesome game nonetheless.

No those details are important but do not giveaway a whole lot of the actual plot. When I played therough the game for the first time I was aware that there had to be a reason for my plane crashing so close to Rapture but it doesn't spoil anything. I would get the game it is really fantastic.
