but like open world adventure games.  Hard to find a game similar to gta where you aren't playing a thug though.  I really didn't like playing a thug in gta 4.  In the older games it was more just funny but they made 4 so realistic.  I'd rather play a good guy.  Was thinking of picking up red dead redemption.  Any suggestions?  Will I like red dead a lot more for this simple reason?  I'm pretty picky on quality.

sleeping dogs you can actually choose youre own path, play the Thug or goodish undercover cop. Red Dead is superb. Jokes aside, you will have to get out there and try these games for yourself, you're a self proclaimed fuss pot, use you're powers of being an individual, read a few synopsis' and decide through that..... Different folks, different strokes, express you're right as an individual, dont depend on others or you may find yourself never playing another game with a GS score under 8

I suggest LA Noire

It's kind of like GTA but you solve crimes.

RDR is excellent

You can still enjoy open world without being a psychopath killer. There are so many random events around the world that you don't have to randomly kill people to have fun with it (but you still can). Also, RDR handles pretty much everything better than GTA4.

LA Noire is nothing like GTA4. The open world for that game is pretty much unnecessary. It's merely an adventure game set in big open world that is extremely empty and boring. Sure, there are side missions scattered throughout, but you are never connected to the world. And it fails as a proper, fun adventure game as well; it relies on facial expression thing which feels gimmicky as it continues, and extremely shallow and sometimes very misleading. Only thing LA Noire does good is shooting, and there isn't much of it.

I disagree. To me 3/4 of La Noire felt like a carbon copy of GTA IV. The other 1/4 was finding clues and interrogating suspects. if we take that out of the equation I would be at a loss about what is different. You still have a car, a radio station, a partner, a waypoint on the map, pedestrians, same cover system, if anything it's like a smoother, better looking copy of GTA IV minus the hookers, same cutscenes, same everything.

I uhh.... what? The focus of the game is completely different. They may look similar, but it ends there. They play completely differently. GTA4 is about shooting guns and doing missions based around driving and shooting. LA Noire is (supposedly) about investigating and interrogating. Sure, they aren't all that good mechanics-wise, but they still hold significant place. In fact, driving in LA Noire is so goddamn unimportant that you can skip 80% of it, and the rest are scripted chase scenes that rarely lasts long. And radio station, a waypoint on the map, pedestrians, cover system (which is a lot better in LA Noire), all those are aesthetic similarities. Seriously, what do they other than cover system which has been used in millions of other games lately have anything to do with the gameplay itself. And GTA4 doesn't have partners.

I played la noire.  It was ok.  The premise was exactly what i was looking for but left somewhat disapointed.  There was too much of a focus on that stupid interrogation mini game and not much to do outside hte story.  Already played Fallout 3 and Oblivion.  And finished Sleeping Dogs.  I think I'll give red dead a go.  Just not sure if it's worth it.  None of these games were that great imo.. fallout 3 is probably the best of the bunch but even that game got  repetitive and boring.

Thing is GTA 4 actually had a lot to do outside the main missions.  Bowling, drinking, darts, dating, shows, comedy, watch tv stunt jumps and the pigeons but how much of that was actually worth doing?  I also had a serious issue hanging out with druggies and doing some of the stuff you do in GTA.  Niko just seemed like a massive loser to me.  I actually really liked cole phelps as a character.

I could always get skyrim.  I've played it.  It's good but eh?  Too much is too much.

Red Dead from what i was reading sounds like it all kind of comes together.  Am I wrong?

The only open world adventure games i haven't finished so far are fallout 3/new vegas, oblivion, skyrim, just cause, and red dead.  i've played far into fallout 3. finished la noire, gta 4 and sleeping dogs.  sleeping dogs was the best one imo.

seems like they dropped the ball this gen in some way with this genre.  It just seems like they could do so much more as far as storytelling, things to do and comedy in some of these open world games.

I played like 10 minutes of red dead and got bored... gta on a horse... people insist it picks up so maybe I will give it another shot

La Noire I loved.... I don't understand why people hated it but I haven't completed it yet

Check out Mafia II if you get a chance to. It's a period piece kind of like LA Noire (you should also check this out) but in Mafia II you play a mobster on the rise and the game is very well done. Very good atmosphere and story. It's got the GTA elements where you run around shooting/stealing cars but the story is what really brings everything together far better than GTA IV did. Also the music is awesome. RDR is also good so do check that out.

RDR doesn't start till you get to armadillo. And that's about 40 minutes of game time. If you want a game that gives you instant pleasures, you should be looking for games that's aren't so story-focused.

Mafia II was a great game but the story in that game was copy-and-paste of classic gangster movies. I'm not even sure if it was an homage or a rip-off, because some parts are just... ugh. And as much as I didn't like GTA4 as a game, it did have a great, original story.

I remember seeing developer interviews before it came out where they discussed how they took certain elements of some movies and incorporated them into the game to give it a more cinematic experience. The story itself was original though, and it was really well made. Anyway, regardless of that, it's a game worth checking out this gen, especially at 20$ brand new and with the DLC. I heard they're currently working on the third game for next gen which I can't wait for.

i picked up red dead today. got the game of the year edition for 19.99.  So far it was worth it.  Enjoying it much more than gta.  I can already tell the characters are more up my alley.

No, I don't mean it was a bad game, I liked the game at full price honestly, but the story was full of cliches. Sure, as a whole it was original, but the parts that made it up were largely cliched. Still very well done. Voice acting is just awesome, so good.

So far been playing red dead for 2 days straight and love it.  I don't mind being a badass.  Something about gta i just didnt like at all though. Weird how two games from the same company and everything is seemingly done right with one and not so with the other.  I guess I bought the wrong game this gen.  Red Dead is awesome.  I've played so many games this gen and this is the only one i've played where i feel satisfied with my purchase.

Whereas I hated Red Dead but love GTA, though in my case I think it's the setting, never cared for westerns

i like the setting of gta as well.  I just wish it wasn't so whatever it is.   Seems to me like they could make a modern day realistic open world game that's different.

I didn't enjoy GTA IV as much as I enjoyed previous ones. But I did like Saints Row series. But you said, you don't like the whole thug thing. Give it a try there's a lot more to do and more customization.
