I'm getting quite pissed at the comments which state that DIRT isn't "realistic" enough, I mean seriously has no one come across proper rally racing, it's quite popular in the UK? I know rally racing isn't big in the US and the americas, but a lot of comments seem to be so ignorant.

Firstly the cars are supposed to turn on a sixpence, i.e. very easily, it's the nature of rally racing that the cars have to handle brilliantly or else you're dead, crashed over a cliff edge. Remember these cars have to go down straights at 110mph and then take a hairpin at 30mph instantaneously. They're not stiff nascar cars which feel like they would need an airport runway to do a 3 point turn.

Below are videos of rally racing and how the cars handle, it shows that DIRT is realistic, it's car damage model is also excellent.

Rally Racing Video 1

Awesome video of a rally master 8)

EDIT: Watch the videos before posting

The problem comes when you compare rally racing to nascar or track racing, two completely different forms of racing.

Oh and DIRT is awesome. :D

Excellent post. I was just playing DiRT and realized that the cars were VERY touchy. See the hands in the video of the drivers and in turns they are all over the place. BTW that video was awesome as well. It is crazy when the guy drives down a straight with people all lined off to the side and running off the road lol. DiRT is an AWESOME game. I am def. Buying it. I got the wheel just 2 days ago (If you live in canada, get it from Futureshop until the 31st for only 100CND (60 bucks off!). The wheel is really fun with this game.

I just downloaded the DiRT demo this morning and was definitely impressed.  The first track I tried was with the Evo though because what I know of Rally is that the Evo won Colin Mcrae (?) a million championships or something.  So I tried it and wow, the dirt track and Evo were terrible.  So slippery and floaty.  But then I tried the dune buggy and had a blast, then the Impreza and had fun as well.  Maybe its just the Evo?  The buggy handled beautifully on a dirt race track.

It's slightly simplified for the controller, remember that unlike a steering wheel in which you can do a full lock in under a second an analog stick is just not the same.

i love the game but the only thing I can complain about is when I crash and the car starts flipping in the air is like its trying to pull is self down and land on the wheels again, instead of landing on the roof. its like a magnet sometimes. other than that its an awsome game and i cant wait for it to get released, ive already played the demo trough like 20 times. just cant get enough of DiRT

I agree... well on the part about Dirt.  Your post is interesting though, you show your concern for ignorance regarding a certain type of racing and then downplay NASCAR... that seemed unecessary, but oh well.

I really enjoy playing Dirt with the controller, but it feels pretty terrible with the steering wheel.  I don't know how to describe it,  but I always end up overcompensating.  It feels like there's some sort of mouse acceleration but applied to steering, and it's terrible.  I don't have this problem with Forza.  I'll play with the controller settings some more and see if I can get it figured out.  The force feedback effects are GREAT with this game.

I'm with ya dude! I'm a long time fan of the Colin McRae series (well any rallye game honestly) and rallye racing in general and DiRT is one of the best rallye games to come around in a long, long time. After playing the demo I have even more love for this game. I really could careless what people have to say about DiRT or rallye racing in general, as long as I get my copy! June can't come soon enough.

I didn't think that Evo was too slipperly on the uphill race, infact I think it handled perfectly; maybe you're just not used to playing rally games.

I think the handling is a little too off. There is no way on earth an Evo could stop that short on a loose surface in real life, that is defying the laws of physics. It is a good game though.

Here in America, there is oval racing on dirt (A lot of the NASCAR drivers come from that background). It's basically the same as taking a long, left handed sweeper on the mountains without elevation changes. Those people know the basics of sliding on dirt... although I know rallying is more demanding. Plus dirt track models are very heavy, unlike the stripped down 4WD cars used in the WRC.

How was he downplaying Nascar?  All he said was that Rally and Nascar are two very different types of racing styles.  The comment on the three point turn on a runway hanger is not negative, it's just stating that the steering is different and Nascar only requires you to turn left, you're not sliding all over the place.

Heck.. maybe you don't but I do need my brakes if I wanna make it past those tricky sharp left/right turns especially on the hill climb mode and the race against Mr. Colin.

Dirt was a fun game, and it was good looking, but it's not "true" rally racing. It's more of the M-Games made up...rally (forgot what it's called) but, most true rally races are times 1 car at a time and on dirt.

That's the only problem I had regarding the physics of the game.  I have never played any rally sim and I don't know too much about rally racing, so I can't comment how real it is, but it definately SEEMS like the car can stop way too fast.  Going 100+ mph and it can still stop in a couple seconds.

I totaly agree, i cant believe noobs who didnt even know what Rally was a few mothns ago are talking smack about COlin Mcrae Dirt, the demo was just fantastic, i cant get enough of it, beating COlin on that rallycross is such an adrenaline rush

The guy is right, this is not Nascar or whatever, rally cars are very versatile, they have to be, they dont just go round a boring loop a thousand times, they have to be able to handle any surface and any turn, at insane speeds.

I think the game has become easier to handle tho, i hope the final game has settings to change this, beacuse i fear they have toned down the difficulty to appeal to more people. All the previous Colin games have been amesome so i dont see this one being any different

I know how you feel man, Iv also posted threads about games that i love then some n00b comes on and ignores the fact that its an opinion and starts looking for an arguement.

But I loved the dirt demo to death but i hate haveing to restart the demo after beating the three tracks :P. Totaly getting this over any racer out there mainly because after every new video I see of it I go "wow :o i wanna race there, arhhh release it now" but it would of been nice to play with the buggies online, but still amazing.

And the realism of the game is on the mark, rally cars are tuned so they dont become death tracks on hills and cliff sides.

Also on the secound track with the evo the reason it feels wierd to handle is because your racing on sand people sand, the game wouldnt be fun if each surface had the same effect on handling.

the car turns unrealistic. it has a pivot point in the middle of the car. that makes the car feel floaty and without grip (even on asphalt).

they say the cars don't have this pivot point.. but they do...

What are you on about? Rally racing =/= track racing. Have you even seen any of the vids posted in this thread? Did you see how the cars slide around the corners easily???

I think the controls were great, to get round fast you have to be very precise and not just throw the car round the corner, its arcadey if you want to play it like that, but if you want to be extremely fast and realistic its all there for the taking. Its like when people play an F1 they are like wtf a car cant to that!11!!11, yes they can, you would be amazed at what a rally car can do, watch rally, they barely slow down for any corner, even 180 turns.

A large reason some popel see DIRT as unrealistic or arcady is because they are used to the PGRs and Gran Tourismos as the "Racing Sims". This means that they are used to the racing sims being about slowing down to about 5 mph to make a turn and the fact that cars on roads handle differently than cars on dirt (oh and the fact that the tires are different for each type).

When i drift around corners in Gran Tourismo (well as much as possible) and feels more right then driving the right way. That may also be because i drift my car around my town a lot and i can actually tell you that This is realistic and unrealistic, but then again this is a game compared to a real car. I mean i can almost never do a good drift when going 45 because i always spin out. Now i can tell you why and it isn't because i am going too fast, but it is because i turn too sharply and this game doesn't really allow you to turn as sharply (well or so quickly) so to spin out you have to be turning and laying on your brake or handbrake.

All in all though the game i would say is closer to being realistic than many think while it does have its own share of flaws atleast it has damage and doesn't make you bounce off cars so much. Yea Gran Tourismo that means you and i don't count scrapping the paint and making parts fall off that actually don't fall off as real damage... Forza Motorsport.... cheap a**es.

If you've never watched rally racing, you have no right commenting on how realistic this game is or isn't. Besides it's a f****** videogame,  not real life.
