I was reading about how you can install games on your Xbox 360 today. And that the 360 will run the game off the system and not off the disk, but still needs the disk in the tray to verify you own the game.

So when I was installing one of my games(GTA4) and I noticed it kept pausing at 39% and then would say the disk was scratched and to take it out and try again, etc. I tryed it a few times and the same thing happened. When I tryed just playing the game off the disk, it loads up but as soon as I walk out of "Niko's apartment/hangout/loading point", it then pops up and says that the disc is scratched, etc etc. I checked my GTA4 disk and it has a big ring-like scratch around it, clearly caused by the 360. This is the first time my 360 has scratched one of my games. I bought this game in June and its worked fine until now. I never move my system with discs in it or play games with the 360 vertically. I'm puzzled by why the disc got struggled but thats not my question.

My question is, could I rent/borrow a working copy of GTA4, then install it on my 360 and then still use my scratched disk to run it? In theory, this should work. Because a working copy of the game is installed on my 360 and runs off the system instead of the game being run off the disk. So after I return the working copy back to wherever/whoever I got it from, the 360 will still want a GTA4 disc to verify I own the game, so my scratched disk should still work because its not running the game off the disc, but off the system. And only needs the disc for verification, right?

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

go find some good quality carwax. find a nice clean smooth rag, like one of the screen cleaning rags, pour a little carwax on there, and handbuff the hell outta it, if it doesn't work, give it another layer. three layers were able to save my circular scratched halo 2.

Hmmm I don't know how to solve these problems, you could try it I guess, it could totally work. I just buy the 3 dollar protection plans when I can from EBgames to make sure I'm protected though from my 16 games none of the discs have gotten scratched.

That should work, but I haven't heard of anyone doing so therefore not sure if it would be successful. The circular scratch on a game is due to tilting the console while its on with a disc inside.

If you rent a copy of the game and install it on your harddrive then you can just place the scratched disk in the tray and play off the installed copy. All it needs if a legit copy of the disk, doesn't matter if its ruined, alot of people have chosen this instead of buying a new game.

I had the same problem with Battlefield Bad Company, so I'm thinking I'm just going to rent the game install it, and play it off of my scratched game (no idea how it got scratched so badly it was in fine condition the week before I got my new HDD and now its scratched for some reason. I also might see if the local video rental shop will clean my disk. As to the person who asked if he could play the game after he returned it to a friend and installed it, only if you have the game disk in your disk tray.

well, i had a problem where my fifa 09 would crash at a certain point so i tried installing it to see if that would work. after that i thought that was that last time i be playing that, but then i thought i just get a new one and take it back. in the end i borrowed my mates fifa and installed that. well it worked. anyway my fifa should of still worked because it had no scratches on but when i looked real closer i could see a faint ring around it. i blame my xbox, hope it doesnt do it to any of my other favourite games. i have the shi**y harddrive you see and no memory left. now im thinking of buying the 120 gb so it saves my games from dying. i guess theres atleast actually one good thing about the new install feature. wish it came out when i alot younger. my games broke alot.

so from whats everyone saying With my scratched copy of Resident Evil 5 (damage caused by tilting the console), I can just rent or borrow a copy and install it. So with my scratch copy I would just have to insert it and resume playing the game as nothing happened?

first you have to get a working disc by renting or borrowing. Then you install the working disc into your hard drive. then put your scratched up disc put it in your xbox 360 then it will work.

Hmmmmmmmmm, what I do everytime I get a new game (the ones I'll play more often), I install it in my hard drive ASAP before I play it. I do it everytime and all my disk works great. Heck, my SVR 09 disk got a big scratch in the middle of the disk and It still works great! Just make sure you Install your games ASAP when you get it, but If you have a 20GB hard drive, then well! You could only Install 2 games, which s*cks, so yeah. I have the 120GB hard drive and I Install like 5-8 games (maybe more, can't remember) and like what I said before, they work great. Thats from my experience.
