I bought Tiger Woods 10 the day it came out and the day it came out there is a new Course that costs 600 Microsoft points. I can't believe I spent 60 dollars on a game and they couldnt of included a course, and they are trying to make me spend another 10 bucks to get it? Also, in career mode you can buy high level clubs early without unlocking them with microsoft points. EA is stupid

I know, think thats bad, when they released Resident Evil 5, they said there was to be a online mode also. Thing was you had to then pay more points on top of $60 and get this online, and the content was already on the disc. It's a disgrace.

Tiger has always done that. Well at least the clubs part. I dont mind it though, You can spend countless hours playing that game in single player to unlock stuff or you can just pay a couple bucks to get it now. For me I enjoy playing Tiger with my friends and if I can do something to enjoy it more now then I dont mind spending 5-6 bucks to do it.

IMO the biggest rip offs are DLC map packs.

Tiger Woods is basically an RPG. Even call it an MMORPG if you want since you can play online. You have a single golfer or character that you're developing. You have stats for your different attributes to increase. And then you have the gear that you can get to boost your stats. ("I just got the magical SQ2 driver that boosts my power stat +2") So if you're serious about competing, especially online where the freaks are, you have to put in the time to "strengthen" your character. Now you can play through career mode and work your way up the ladder and collect different clubs, outfits, accessories (weapons, armor). That's up to you. But not everyone has that kind of time. So you can buy to unlock items. This is just borrowing the Asian free to play MMO model of letting you buy the best gear instead of just grinding for it. Now "free to play" being that some of those Asian MMO's are free download and play with base gear, (weapons, outfits, armor, etc.) and it's ENTIRELY UP TO YOU if you want to work or grind your way to unlock the cool stuff or just buy it so you can jump right in. I know we're paying $60 for the game, but at least you have the option of unlocking all of the stuff rather than having to play for hours and hours on end just to get those cool clubs or unlock a certain course. You have right to your opinion and be angry if you want, but remember that you aren't forced to buy any of this stuff. Put in your time and grind away. Just realize that the OPTION to buy, makes the whole game more accessible to people who don't have all of the time to put into it.

There's the arguement that this game shouldn't even be like an RPG. This is probably where most people's opinions fall. There's a good blog about it at Penny Arcade. http://www.penny-arcade.com/2009/6/17/

Pretty much this. Even one of my favorite games does this in a way. In Tales of Vesperia I can buy levels, gald (gold),and rare ingredients for a price. Personally I would rather level grind rather than waste my money or fight some bosses.

I agree that its maybe a bit silly moaning that stuff you can earn in game can be bought, because if you don't want to buy it then you don't have to. What frustrates me is useless DLC. I enjoy playing FIFA, I like to play virtual games of football on my ps3 or xbox. What I don't like is EA coming out and saying "We've got this amazing new thing...its exactly the same as the old thing, except it's like a trading card game...oh, and we'll say its free but actually it is £7.99...and we know you pay £39.99 year on year to buy yet a new, updated version of the same old game but, rather than work to make that expensive thing good, we'll develop some other money making scam."
OK, so, yeah maybe I don't have to buy it...but if I've paid good money for a game, and intend to continue paying good money for the series, I damn well expect little things like that to be free.

And don't get me started on map packs...I'm sick of being called 'cheap' or 'poor' by my friends on xbox because I haven't got the map packs on Call of duty...No, I don't, because I begrudge paying money for something that has, for all intents and purposes just been left out of the game in the first place to make money!

Either include it on the game, or make it free! There's a difference between DLC like GTA: The Lost and Damned (i.e. same city, but entirely new scenario) and a couple of maps, or a card game gimmick for a samey football game.

Here's the kicker. . . . . . . .it's probably already on the disc you just paid for. The 600 points you pay for the DLC usually just "unlocks" it, unless it's like a 50mb+ download. This is similar to what EA did with NFS Carbon. I think they did that with a few other games as well.

I've made arguments about the whole map pack thing. I look at it like this. The development of the game is done, over, finished and it's released. You have your campaign and you have your multiplayer component. Lovely. Most games give you enough content to be content with for a while. But, everyone gets tired of the same locales of course. Now people expect and demand that more content be available for online play. So now the developers have to go and put in more time and work to develop completely new environments for your game to work in. It isn't an overnight process. That's their job. So they have to be compensated for that. You've seen the regularity at which map packs are released. Every few months maybe, depending on the game? Maybe I have a soft spot for the devs since I'm a Java developer and know what the process is like. And the stuff they do is freaking complex. Bugs happen and have to be fixed. Then there's testing. I don't expect all that work to be free. It doesn't bother me to drop a few bucks to get new maps for a game I enjoy. And again, you have the option to not buy and still play the game.

I do partly agree DJ, and indeed, I am perfectly happy that map packs exist, and that, especially with CoD, they allow the opportunity to skip maps if you don't like/have that map.

But for every good set of developers working on maps for the current game there are a) said developers not working on the new games, and b) companies charging the same money for unlock cracks to stuff already available on the disc.

Plus, how much of the money for these things actually makes it to the devs? I'm pretty certain they're salaried and, the change from offline to online gaming, and the subsequent increase in downloadable content did not lead to a proportional rise in developer salary.

you dont have that option when it comes to halo.. one of the biggest games on the 360, because without the map packs you cant play some of the best playlists... all DLC is stupid and the people saying "you dont have to buy it" are missing to point. a game like resident evil 5.. this one boggles my mind the most. they released the game then charge you to unlock a VERSUS mode.. something that should have come with the game.. instead of these people robbing us of all our money they could actually just make the game 100% the first time so everything is included and we dont have to go spending over 90 dollars for a game+dlc

Problem is the the PC developers either release mod tools so we can get the maps for free or the developers release all their maps for free..... Did the PC gamers have to pay for CoD4 maps???? That is an honest question. I don't expect to get everything for free, but you know they can put out 90% for free because either it was developed (and finished) during the development of the game which means it should come with the game and not cost extra. That is the main problem. I can see paying for extra maps that are created months after the game is finished, but to remove content and then release it at either the same time as the game or a week later is uncalled for and the only reason they do is because we the gamers are stupid enough to pay for it. And also consider the timed pay to play Halo 2 maps and Gears 1 maps. When content is released for free it doesn't mean they don't make money off it. If a game was released and had 3 map packs (all for free) does that make you want it more than the exact same game with 3 map packs for $10 a piece..... That is why the Halo 2 maps tried to pay for this long and then for free. They make money off the initial sales and then slightly improved game sales afterwards. I also complain about over priced content like GH2 songs (i am pretty sure it was 6.25 for 3 songs.... and you may only want 1 of those songs plus those songs are stuck to the game... i pay $1 on itunes and i can listen to it anywhere and you know peope buy the songs they like to listen to not the songs they like to play because they don't know how they will play until they pay and Horse Armor. Now it is true we don't have to buy them, but people will and they will affect other prices. If people are willing to pay that much for being ripped off then why not up the price on everything else. So yes not all content should be free, but content removed from the game to be released later should and all i can say is that the price will only go up. Look at MMOs.... with that competition you think companies would compete with prices, but they don't because they know people will be willing to pay $180 a year on top of the $50 to play the game. Prices will not go down, but only go up in the case of DLC and i am sorry but i will never pay a developer for a map pack if the prices get to $15 for 3 maps or $20.

Map packs are fine, there is no problem. The problem comes when developers charge for content that is already on the disk that you paid for or when they release an incomplete game and then charge you extra money to get a finished product.

We have to make sure that developers and publishers don't become too greedy and that we allow them to release incomplete games as a norm.
