Do intercoolers do what they are supposed to do or are they a waste of money?

I am thinking about buying a intercooler for my new 360.

I have some questions about them?

1: Do intercoolers do what they are supposed to do or are they a waste of money?

2: Which intercooler is better and works better, the one that goes on the sides or the one that goes on the back?

3: Do intercoolers make your 360 hotter because I read some where that they do?

I've had 5 360's break, after #2 I bought an intercooler, no help, lost 2 more, took it off and lost another one. Thank god they've got a great warranty.

I had mixed results with the Intercooler. I'm convinced that it prolonged the life of my first 360. The Intercooler broke, so I'm not a huge fan. I never bought a new one, and I don't really recommend it because of the horror stories I have read on here.

Yea I've pretty much been completely turned off any sort of intercooler thanks to the burnt out power socket stories that I've read. That being said, they did say they'd replace any 360 that was damaged due to their product.

But TBH, I've never had one and I've never encountered a freeze up anyway. So as long as you've got your 360 in a well ventilated area, you should be fine.

I've never used and Intercooler and my 360 is fine, and like many people I've heard horror stories. I will say this, at my local GameStop I tried to purchase an intercooler. Both the clerk and the manager told me on no uncertain terms that I was making a big mistake. They said they had lost count of the number of times they saw people come in with busted 360's due to the Intercooler overheating and burning the socket. I don't know how reliable that is, but I'll just put that out there.

I just don't think it's really worth the risk. I mean, you've still got that 3 year warranty from Microsoft if something bad happens, and frankly I just don't trust intercoolers. I mean, really, if you're paying money, at LEAST the product shouldn't HURT your 360! I mean, if the Intercooler didn't help, OK that kind of sucks, but if there's even the slightest chance that it might actually do HARM, well ... I just think that's a bad deal. Pay money to brick your 360? What sort've a deal is that?
